I feel you're relying on solid lines to create your forms and shapes which gives it more of an animated look, unless that is what you were heading for, it's usually better practice to pick up on highlights and shades to create those shapes--same applies to the hair and teeth, making it solid is never the best of ideas. Especially with teeth; I always remember the words of my highschool art teacher when I'm doing teeth which were " Looking good Harvey, you've really captured the essence of that rapist." "He's not supposed to be one?" "Than fix those teeth, he looks creepy,". So yeah drawing each individual teeth equals a no no apparently. Good job with the nose though, personally hardest part for me, you did a good job. Was on my way out but when I get back I might add substance to this post since Traditional art is my forte over Graphic! Anyway, good job. EDIT: Whoa, typo galore. Fixed

Anyway, good job. LOL Yeah, I learned that when I did my Chuck-Close-esque self-portrait in high school. (Ah..Chuck Close's grid method. So simple but it works like a charm.) @Kraq: Good stuff. Although, as pointed out by Hostage, the teeth makes it look a bit creepy. It was the first thing that stood out when I saw the picture.

Blending stump - your best friend and lover.
Lines are way to thick. Actually there shouldn't even be any visible lines.

Ah, okay. I definately see what you guys are saying.
Animated is not what I'm going for :d Haha, before I drew I would always see other people's drawings of teeth and think,"Wow, they look so creepy, like rabbits. I know I won't make that mistake." And I have :3 I won't do solid lines anymore (:
Next time I'm around an art supply store, I'll pick one up. I remember using the blending stump in art class, pretty nifty.
Practice makes perfect, I guess. Thanks for the tips.

it's not bad. I notice a mistake in his eyes. they are much to wide open. that, and I guess something is off about the mouth. both mistakes together make him look a little bit like he's in pain rather than smiling while being blinded by the sun. as Hostage mentioned: watch out with the teeth and lips.
but if this is really your first try then it's damn good.

It's currently just chilling on my desk, need to do more portraits, but they aren't coming out as good as I'd hope.
