Trade unions, What are your guys thoughts on them?

I personally have never worked in one before, but the previous company I worked for really makes me want to join a union this time around.

so what are you guys thoughts on them? good, bad or good sometimes bad sometimes?

depends on industry, you'll need to specify so we can pretend to know what we're talking about/google.

The general idea behind trade unions is great, and I think they're vital to any balanced country. However, there is such a thing as taking it too far. That's the case in the Netherlands right now. The unions are too influential and are making really bad calls imo.
A couple of months ago all our big cities looked like big scrapyards because the garbage men were striking. And for what? 20 euro a month extra...
I really lost my respect for trade unions there. Companies were suffering, all because trade unions thought 20 euro a month was gonna save people. It was a stupid matter of principle, and it really showed how arrogant and irresponsible trade unions have become in the Netherlands.

I'm not in favor of unions right now simply because of how tough it is to get work ATM.

They are good if you're a member, though. Benefits and job security are always good.

the original concept behind unions is a good thing, keeping the big guys from playing unfairly. But unions these days just take advantage of their status to suck out as much money and benefits as possible.

If there is one union I hate, it is the teachers union. Bitches won't let anyone get fired, even if they commit a serious offense/crime. There needs to be a system where we can fire shitty teachers and replace them with better ones from input from students/parents. New teachers just have to look good during tenure, and then after that they can just fck around and nobody can touch them.

Very well said. I pretty much agree, but you give too much of a generalization on the teacher's union. Teachers have a very difficult job, and the union needs to be very tough.
