Mmmhm Cards to look for in a laptop if you want to play newer games on med/high ati 5650 nvid 330m (not as good) These are some of the more popular cards I've seen used in laptops. I'm not entirely sure of the 330m but notebookcheck said they're almost as good as the 5650, but do note that ati's line has direct x 11 and nvidias does not. I still think the easiest way you'll get a laptop is from bestbuy/futureshop. I'm not sure of their policy in the US, but here you can return a laptop within 14 days for any reason, assuming you didn't break it. Look through their $800-$1000 options and buy one with a gfx card, test a game or two on it. If you like..keep. Post it here and we'll help as well.

Thought I'm short a few hundreds at the time being. I noticed that you are looking for one under $1000 and can handle high end games. That's gonna be tough. 1.) Processor. The link in your first post is good, but you need to go for an i7core and not a duo. duo is so 2 years ago and is only dual core (I made that mistake) and the i5 core they provide is a piece of crap. 2.)RAM. Definitely go for the 4Gb as it's only $50 more than the 2GB. I only have 3Gb in my desktop atm(32 bit os =[) and it sucks when tying to mulltitask a lot of different things. 3.)HDD depends on what you expect to have on it. I could prolly settle for 160GB. (I personally am getting an SSD though)That only amounts to $1,149 if you go with Quote: PROCESSOR- Intel® Core™ i7 640UM OPERATING SYSTEM- Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bit) MEMORY- 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 800MHz HARD DRIVE- 160GB SATAII 5,400RPM That I might say is a pretty good deal. overkill...he can find something much cheaper on newegg that will still play high end games... Overkill? I don't think it's overkill. In fact the one I want is almost $2,000. When buying laptops I always think of what I would spend on a desktop and double it. With that he won't experience any system lag most likely and it's only $150 above his budget. The i7 may be a tad overkill, but the Duo/i5 they offer for that specific system he linked are terrible. I was working with the Alienware in his first post, the build I provided is what I think would be the cheapest best method.

If your gonna be playing SC2 then I suggest a good processor, i5 is usually enough, or was in my case, and an ok gpu.

I play sc2 on an i3 mobile which is different from an i3 desktop version (slower). I can play ladder games 100% fine, only games like custom sc2 game like nexus wars (many many many units on the screen) slows me down. But that happens even on an i7 =\
An i5 should be more than sufficient.

overkill... No such thing as a computer too powerful You don't buy a gatling gun to kill a fly. Why would you pay $2000 for something that you will in all likelihood never take full advantage of and will be out of date and worth half as much in a matter of months...

Sorry but the specs for the price are shitty as hell, thats the complete opposite of a deal. Mine cost about half of that was used and I got better specs.

Actually I would try use it to it's full advantage. I'm not gonna buy something I wouldn't use. I multi task like a mo fo. Plus $2,000 is different for a lot of people. For me it doesn't seem like much. Maybe that's why I would buy a laptop for that. Any computer would be out of date within a year so by that standard, ppl would just keep waiting and waiting for a computer that wouldn't be out of date. Which doesn't make sense. I would rather get a computer that is more powerful than I need, than one that isn't powerful enough. (I do have the advantage of $1250 of it being payed for with a special college grant)

The out-of-date-in-a-year logic really only applies to gaming (and gfx), as dual cores have been a standard for everything else since they came out and still are..iX line is only making its full appearance this year and won't fully be appreciated for a while. In all honesty it barely applies to gaming as well though, unless you need something that plays every single new game on max (and in reality money is better spent..elsewhere).
But the college gave you money to spend on your education so..go wild on a gaming laptop. Wait I see the issue there..

Azilius wrote: But the college gave you money to spend on your education so..go wild on a gaming laptop. Wait I see the issue there.. The Grant is Specifically for a laptop. It covers up to $1250 of it and I'm allowed to pay the rest out of my pocket. I have FAFSA for Tuition/Books. And I wouldn't call it a gaming laptop. Just a high performance Laptop that could Handle gaming. I agree with the out of date logic being a little exaggerated. Dual/Duo cores are still pretty good if they are 2ghz+
