I'm using a Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) right now. I used to have a Nexus One (manufactured by HTC), and before that, an HTC Hero, but sold my N1 and purchased a Captivate. I can't say I've felt anything but regret ever since.
HTC makes higher-quality products than most other smartphone makers on the market (Apple, Motorola are possible exceptions). They use high-quality materials that feel and look nice in the hand as opposed to the smudge-magnet that is my plasticky Captivate. And the new Nexus S (manufactured by Samsung) comes nowhere close to the original N1 in terms of build quality.
HTC also is much better in the customer service arena than Samsung is; they're very good at pushing out updates, despite the fact that they overlay stock Android with Sense. It's been more than six months since Froyo came out, and despite the promises that Samsung and AT&T made when I originally purchased the phone, I still haven't received the Froyo update yet. This is ridiculous when you think about the fact that Gingerbread is already out, and you already hear rumors that Ice Cream is coming in the next few months as well.
Whatever you do, don't get a Samsung. HTC I can wholeheartedly recommend.
