Also, you might want to look at getting a SSD instead of HDD since HDD prices are higher than normal now. You can get a decent sized SSD for $100.

Decent sized as in how much? I need at least 500GB and that's still kinda tight for me.

Go to canadacomputers to buy. You save on shipping, painful experiences if you have to return anything, and they have comparable if not better sales than newegg.

also you can get 8gb ram for 30-40$ if you look for deals. Speed really isn't important.

it's true hard drives are at a really high price still because of the floods, but the real reason for getting an SSD is the seek time (0.1 ms compared to 7~ms for HDD). 100$ can get you a 90-120 gb SSD depending on the deal. I think canadacomps has the ocz agility 3 120gb for 105$ pretty often.

If you can salvage your old HDD that could help, but really I recommend getting an ssd AND an HDD. The SSD performance increase is actually amazing.

Azi has a point Ram can be found way cheaper. and as for the SSD the only main reason i have one is to boot up windows faster. Not gonna drop another 100 bucks till i find a reason to make something else go a little faster. So lucky i got my HDD when a 1 TB was still 76 bucks.

Lol yeah Azi, Canada Computers is about 10 minutes away from me. I only did it on Newegg because their site has much better interfacing, but yeah I'm definitely considering a small ssd just for the boot-up times of most shit i'll have on my computer. I'm going to see if I can order the stuff online and have it sent to the store, free of shipping costs

hard drives are just too expensive anywhere at the moment, its a little sad that 4 years ago i got a 500gb so much cheaper then you can get it now... and 500 is considered "small" now

What's the deal with ram and 32bit and 64bit systems again?
Like what's optimal with what?
Also, how do I know if a mobo can support front usb/headphone+mic ports on a case?

id pretty much guarentee that your new motherboard would have a connection to the front usb/headphone sockets.
unless youre choosing smaller or weird form factors.... it will have one

I'd swap that 560Ti for a radeon 6850 or 6870 and get an i7 2600 or 2600k.



64 bit systems allow more than 4gb of ram to be used. Doesn't matter how much ram you have while using 32 bit, 4gb is the max that can be used. I got 64 bit windows with 16 gigs of ram, and it can use the 16 gigs.

well... sort of but not 100% accurate...
32 bit systems can use between 3 and 4g and i say between because it will vary depending on system... 32 bit systems is unable to correctly use that last gig.

i THINK 64 bit systems use more ram though, so if you have 4gig ram i think its better to stick to a 32 bit operating system.
i would personally only switch to 64bit when i can get 2x 4g ram sticks that arent expensive so i could get 4 of them.

im not sure how 64 bit systems run now as i remember them as being unstable...
xp 64 was noticeably different to 32 xp and vista 64 was even worse!... but that was because vista sucked lol

i dont know how 64 windows 7 works ive never tried it... i would assume that more and more applications and drivers are available for 64 bit systems now which would be something to think about.

back when 64 xp was released, drivers were hard to get hold of and often not stable themselves...

id love to here some feedback on experience of 64 bit windows7 on 4g ram to see if people think its worth moving up to 64 bit windows? and how easy it is to use (apart from the annoying x86 folders)

The RAM you have selected is 8 gigs so you need a 64 bit operating system. 64 bit operating systems are perfectly stable and have close to no compatibility problems. Everything runs fine on my computer.

Windows 7 64bit is "heavier" to run than the 32bit version (noticable on low end systems mostly. eg. I3 - 4GB RAM), but seeing the hardware u posted u should go for 64bit. (i5 2500k + 8GB ram => 64bit, if u go 32bit u will only be able to use 4GB instead of 8GB anyway...)

Also, for the love of god DO NOT TAKE A GREEN HARDDRIVE!
They are sooooo slow. They should only be used as a second disk (eg. Containing ur downloadsfolders)
The green drives always run at a slower RPM (5900RPM while a normal 3.5" disk runs at 7200RPM)
Doesn't seem much of a difference, but the difference is huge.
Quick booting with a green hd? forget it.
Better spend 30$ more for a 7200RPM disk and enjoy faster booting/loading.
Or do the ssd + green combo

From personal experience, I've replaced a lot more green drives than blue drives. Blacks nearly never have to be replaced (I work 95% of the time with WD though)
