Some amazing things discussed in the video:

*The oldest tree is believed to be between 3000-5000 years old, with a large number of them reaching the 2500 mark.

*Because of their age, some organisms are found UNIQUELY on certain trees. That is to say, a specific tree might have organisms that is not found anywhere else on earth, including neighboring trees.

*There is a soil formation in the canopy, up to 1 metre deep. In this soil formation, unique species of copepods are found. They're crustaceans similar to the ones that are eaten by whales in the Ocean. Found hundreds and hundreds of feet up in the air, no one has any explanation on how these sea organisms managed to find themselves in the soil structure of these trees.

*Through a process called reiteration, the tree can grow trees out of branches. These new trees can grow more trees, and the process can happen up to 6 times. To explain, this would be similar to having each finger be a miniature person, and each miniature person's finger have another miniature person...6 times over.

Width of a trunk, and this is simply of average size - there are much wider ones

That was interesting and a great read It also reminded me of the Baobab trees which inhabit Africa. But, I do not believe they possess the same rare organisms though, it does make me really wonder how those crustaceans found their way inside.. Maybe a combining of Ecosystems? It also reminded me of Ping_Lo's speech once, about "how the trees have seen it all happen before." Regarding how one should act when faced with Trolling, flaming, etc, etc. Maybe I should read up on that a bit more. :P

Age: 3000-5000. I stand in awe.

Wonder what the bigger ones look like.

I've seen almost every TED video. The ones that I haven't seen are solely because I don't want too, and not because I haven't tried.

Ahhhhh.... people who believe in a worldwide flood might be able to come up with an explanation, but it would be discounted as myth so why even try? Fascinating subject though, thanks! I've seen the redwoods when I was a boy, before the clear-cutting and was awed by their (what's the word?) majesty.

It is interesting how the media never spoke about this.

Largest, not oldest. The oldest of the largest species is 3,500 - 5,000 years old. Giant Sequoias - red pines.

That's not actually the oldest tree (well, it might be) but down the page is says they don't actually tell you which one is the oldest because someone might do something to it.

That's so cool though, hopefully it lives forever :D

That was amazing, Dom, thank you! I live near the redwoods (there's a protected grove near me, but also a couple hours up the coast and I'm in that northern territory that he spoke mainly of.) I haven't been to the redwoods lately, now I think I'll go over and just walk around for a bit, they are so beautiful and amazing.

You know what would have been the coolest thing in all of history ever? If when they climbed those trees, they found protohumans or perhaps even advanced humans (like wizards!!! :D) living in the canopies in the trees, that would have been aaawwweeesssooommmeee

I have a question though, did he say all the giant redwoods are dying? Or was he talking about another species? From what I gathered he was talking about another species, but he did mention that Gaia was dying from something, so I'm not too sure on that.

Anyways, nice video.
