i feel like i read about a patch microsoft released to counter a virus...its solution was you couldn't start up windows. From my understanding they fix'd it in a later patch but that was awhile ago so don't think it would affect you now =/

Can you boot it up with safe mode?
If you can try start it up in safe and use system restore.

You probably do. And is there still a warranty on the pc? If yes just bring it to the shop you've bought it. No stress for you

Get a Windows 7 disk. When you upgrade it will move all your old files to windows.old, archiving everything.
If you install Vista on top of Vista you will be forced to reformat, as far as I remember.

Same exact thing happened with my laptop, same story, same problem, black screen after boot, dont wana go to log in screen e.t.c and i noticed my external HDD was pluged in, so i played around tried to start my pc with and without the hdd and i finally got it to work... system restore, use it.
should be f8 or f10 or something of the sort to give you a list of boot up options, choose recovery console.

I had this good .flv file player but i cant find it for love or money, plus several websites where i got my collection of old games from (old old dos games) dont exist any more Well, it's a smart idea to back up your data to disk.. in case something happens to your computer.. xD
