Should it not be "Don't oc unless you intend NOT TO replace the machine in a year." ? Implying you want to stretch your price/performance to its max for multiple years of use.
Overclocking, if done correctly, won't decrease the lifespan of a machine by a noticeable factor. I'm running on an E5200 (2.13Ghz stock) at 3.6Ghz... been there for 3yrs. Same for the 8800GT paired with it, 100mhz over stock on the core and ram.
Have done the same on past builds, Opterons, P4s, etc...
