I just read this entire thread, and one thing that didnt get said is CONFIDENCE. Thats on of the most important things. If you feel confident on your board, then you can do about anything.
Well ofcourse after practicing. I started out the same as you at about 16, I always went to parks etc, and skaters are actually really nice and helpful

as long as you dont pretend like you can skate XD And i mean, eventually you will really want to try more things and they will work. Many people say start with ollie bla bla, but i couldn't do the ollie and actually my first trick was a pop-shov-it. After, i felt more comfortable and there i did my ollie.
Skating is a way of life

when i go to town to do shopping or hang out with my friends, i take my board. You can always learn new things on the way or find some sick spot

The most fun thing i find doing is the grinds, they are just epic, the noise, feeling ! just great. i never really got into quaterpipes that much because they are boring XD always the up and down etc
Ah and last thing, you have to decide for yourself if you are a parkskater or more and urban skater. Park skater - skating in parks on premade ramps
urban skater - skating outside the parks and making the environment a park for you... Thats what i do
Aight hope this helped somehow
