French is harder. Spanish is easier.
It depends on what you plan on using it for, in the US and south america, spanish is by far the winner. In europe, classical studies, etc. french is win. However, no matter where you go (exception of places where the main language is french or spanish) chances are they speak more english then either one.
I can speak/write in english and french. When I went to France everything was easy sauce, even threw in the real parisien accent a couple times. In Spain, it was very easy to pick up on the language, filled the voids with hand signals. It seems that grabbing ones genitalia, and hopping whilst alternating feet (so a hop on right, hop on left, hop on right, etc.) means "bathroom" in every language.
