Sorry to res this month-old thread but SG your story was hilarious.
I lived in France off and on for about 10 years and I would always tell people to go to Paris in August because there weren't any Parisians there. They all go on vacation in August so Paris is virtually empty. It's strange that you had such a bad time in August. Maybe the people that had to stay behind were bitter and took it out on you.
And for myself, I was with another guy and a girl and as we were stalked by some guy for about a mile. When we made it clear that we knew he was following us, he stopped. Wasn't really worried because I'd put up a Brooklyn bartender against a Parisian homeless transient any day.
Another time, I was with my dad when he got swarmed by a pack of 20 gypsy kids. The ones who rush you and go through your pockets. I just started pushing them away and I don't think he lost anything.
My advice: go to Spain (but not Madrid). The food is better. The music is better. The wine is better. And best of all? It's about 1/10 the price. Oh yeah, to say nothing of the beaches...

I visited france. All the French hated everyone in our group and made everything as difficult for us as the could. There were some damn good resturants there though.

Paris has good food, no doubt, but soooooo expensive. Although it doesn't have a view, I found that the best food at a reasonable price was the Virgin Megastore on the Champs Elysee. I know, nothing fancy, but it does the job. If you are spending a couple weeks there, you'll go broke fast eating at the cafes or restaurants. Seriously, $20 for a coke and ice cream? That's worse than Disneyland!

Last summer I landed in paris, headed south through the cognac region, lourdes, biarritz, etc. Headed into Spain, visited Barcelona and ended in Madrid.
France is amazing, the problem with it is Paris. Even the French hate Parisians - they're inhospitable, and very rash with tourists. Do not judge France by Paris. If you visit some of the more Northern regions (eg Lilles) or even the southern regions it's great. I personally loved the Basque region and it's peoples. My cousin visited Nice this fall, she loved it there as well.
If you're visiting France I highly suggest never going to Paris. if you head to the South there's nice beaches and more tourist friendly places. Biarritz was great for that...surfing, fancy hotels, and exotic cars.
I also liked Spain. But being fluent in french, France was easier. Spain was also alot cheaper. I remember paying 4 euros for a can of coke waiting for the subway... err
Visiting Europe changed my life. I have a great appreciation for bread and cheese now - for a couple months I still had the european taste buds and refused to eat anything 'north american'. But our bread and cheese is incomparable, it's impossible here.
