If you've ever done a reading speed test you'll notice that the time it takes you to understand and read through the whole thread is marginally longer. So although you can understand, you don't necessarily do it as fast, just like a crossword puzzle.
Also, if you've studied Chinese you have to read every character word by word.

They are, you just don't know them, so even if the first and last letters stay the same, it's harder to read, same if the word is really long.
