I couldnt understand why he wanted to be behind him, but an educated guess would be that when both racers start going super fast, the biker that is behind has the chance of winning the race because hehas less wind hitting him since the guy in front is breaking it all although it did not work here...

well its because neither bikers can sprint the whole 3laps (1200m) straight off, so they go slow in the beginning. the person behind has the advantage because theres a "surprise" factor- neither biker knows when the other is going go for it and speed up, so the one upfront has to keep looking at his back..
I think its interesting..but why wouldnt they just lower the meters to like 400m or something..since for the most part they arent sprinting, just trying to get the other to go infront of them.

Well, they clearly meant the average cup of coffe lol. Imagine drinking 9k cups of this size.
