When you're in a car accident or similar you should relax your muscles instead of tense up?

I was in a car accident 2x, and I can't stop shivering few minutes after the accident. I really don't think you could relax.

yeah this is true, even though it is almost impossible.
for this reason, the drivers who drive drunk in an accident usually aren't harmed as much because that driver will have relaxed muscles, compared to a non drunk driver with tense muscles, which get injured easier.

Probably True. Just imagine it. In a car accident, your body is suddenly being forced to move rapidly involuntarily. The jerking motion can easily tear, twist, and damage your body if you are tense and resisting the motion. If you are relaxed, your body is able to naturally compensate for the unexpected motion easier.

In theory of course. Like everyone else said, irl, you tense up naturally. When I saw the car behind me coming at me uber fast, I knew shit was gonna hurt. It was like bracing for impact. Your natural survival skills tells you to tense up, even though it causes more dmg.

This is due to natural selection. Tensing up in the past would probably benefit you since most harm comes in the form of another creature or person. Tensing up in those situation allows you to take the damage inflicted on you, such as a punch or a swipe. Tensing up now-a-days where forces are unexpected and quite strong, causes rapid motion in a back-and-forth manner that leads to tensing being unhelpful.

been in 3 accidents and i always tense up. first and second time i didn't see it coming, third one i saw coming but still tensed up. The thing is people always think they can relax but when they see a couple 100 pound metal box rushing them, they trip.

QFT

Well, I've even heard that you should cross your arms over your chest.

same. i was in 1 very minor accident. it was still scary as shit. and i could not stop shaking. your running a ton+ down the road and another ton+ vehicle comes barreling at you. but yes if you fell asleep at the wheel like on due date then you may well be much better off.

I suppose it's better not to tense your muscles up. But then again I can't stop thinking what kind of damage would that do to your neck.

Also I'm pretty sure that it's impossible to relax in that kind of situation. You really must have nerves made of steel of you can pull that off.

I've heard this too.

A buddy of mine got rear-ended in his minivan like 5-6 years ago. He said he yelled at his wife to relax a split second before the 55-mph impact. instead she reached out her hand to brace herself against the dash. His neck was sore for a few days while his wife broke her wrist, had a year of therapy and still has a loss of motion in her left hand. She also can't rotate her head completely to the left side 90 degrees. They got a settlement of I think 20k which he said barely paid the medical bills and won't compensate completely for her loss of motion.

I hate no-fault states.

I once got in a pretty serious accident (car went over head and was total loss). I was a bit drunk (but not driving), i don't even remember what i was doing at that very time, i just saw the road moving to right (slip), then a very hard hit on my side of the car (the car flipping over). Next thing i see is an broken window, like 20 cm from my face and grass. It took like 5 secs to realize i was upside down (seat belt held me on my place). Me and my cousin (he was driving and the owner of the car) got out unharmed, being very lucky.

I can only say you, when such a thing happens at pretty high speed, you really can't think of it to tense or relax your muscles, your instincts just take over.

This was the car that crashed with me in it:
