I'm quite surprised no one here has talked about this.

Here in Italy, if nine years ago our Minister for Foreign Relations said that Bin Laden wanted to destroy America, he now says that Assange, who is at the moment labeled as "terrorist" (like many other free journalists who don't agree with government), wants to annihilate the whole world. :palm:

Your thoughts?

The majority of the leaked materials are really benign. There are, however, certain ones that I believe should be kept away from public eyes. The man is not a terrorist.

Not a terrorist in the traditional sense...
but i don't see what he is trying to achieve by leaking private cables between countries. all it does is worsen foreign relations.

Wouldn't say terrorist, but no doubt he's a D-Bag.

-Edit- Sorry meant I wouldn't say terrorist.

I would call him a hero. Pushing his freedom of speech rights to greater extents. Some would call it treason, I call it "exposing the unwanted truth."

Not having complete transparency in a democracy is like not being allowed to see a car, let alone drive it, before buying it.

This guy is far from a terrorist or a traitor. If anything he should be labled a hero for his actions, not damned for them.

Exactly my thoughts, but it's not him to blame, but who couldn't keep for themselves what ACTUALLY should not be divulged.

You don't know Italy. :sohappy:
If you understood my language, I'd link you an article where a deputy (and I'm talking about a public figure) calls before a bunch of people in Parliament (another place that may not be public, but is still accessible to cameras, so anyone gets to know what happens in there) one of the most knowledgeable journalists in Italy "mediatic terrorist" just because he writes that a lot of deputies and senators either are collided with Mafia or are just not clean and first person who should not seat in Parliament is our Prime Minister.

I do not think, however, that this worsened relationships between countries. Didn't you see how pathetic Hillary Clinton was few days ago? Just after those "revelations" (here are very well known facts, actually..) she hurried to define Italy "the best ally USA have ever had".

May care to explain?

Don't you think it's kind of farked up that he is like the only person that Interpol and multiple government agencies have actually put effort into tracking down and capturing on "alleged" sexual offense charges.

/sigh

No one would call it treason because he isn't from the US :P . And i don't get how exposing what one country says about another behind their backs is anything heroic. only worsens foreign diplomacy.

I think he's a hero, and people are just so brainwashed that they don't think the truth should be available. It's a bit scary that it's come to this, when someone who exposes governments for what they are are tracked down and branded with sexual offense charges by interpol to bring him in.

He's exposing the truth that already should be available, if people don't understand that, they need to sit down for a bit and think about things.

The situation with him and the police, its laughable really. They drop the charges because they have no case against him. However as soon as the latest documents are published the charges come back and he has international arrest warrants against his name. Not very subtle.

As far as him being a "terrorist" depending on your view point he does fit the definition, however as do many world leaders and news companies.

Either way.. soon enough he'll either be dead or locked up for the rest of his life.

Like him though. The amount of gullible retards in the UK who believe he's a terrorist is insane.

I do know, do you know that wiki leaks publishes more than diplomatic cables? We have the right to know what our nations are saying to each other. Diplomacy will continue as usual. This man is not a terrorist, but will be treated as one and the day he is locked up is a sad day for us, and a great triumph for governments around the world.

It has more to do with what our nations are saying about other nations. for ex., I don't think the US Govt gives a shit if the citizens find out that US diplomats think the president of qatar is a illiterate obese ****. But I'm pretty sure the US Govt would care if the president of Qatar found out about what the US diplomats think about him. No matter how you put it there would be bad blood between qatar and US relations because of it.

I don't have a problems with the other leaks, but there is a reason Assagne is getting a lot of stick for publishing these ones.

One of the main things I noticed about these type of discussions is that some people tend to equate being brainwashed with being non-liberal (or at least not completely liberal). I personally don't think the man is a terrorist but I would advice the guy to at least some form of self-restraint by thinking about the consequences of his actions in the future. Secrecy has its purpose and complete transparency is not always a good thing.

Um, Mark, isn't your country like ran by the Maffia?

But I'll read up on this feller cuz really, I've never heard of him and this thread isn't really helping either.

No, it is not run by Mafia (with an F only :p).
But.
Our Prime Minister has been inquired many times about his collisions with Mafia (we know that in one of his residences once dwelt a very well known Mafia man) and his right arm man got condemned to prison for 7 years due to his associations with Mafia (he still is free because he is a senator :palm: ).

For the rest, many deputies are inquired for corruption, concussion, Mafia and so on..still they're deputies. Why? you would ask me.

I wrote a little more than what you're about to read, but I thought it was way too offtopic, so to sum it up: there are so many corrupt deputies that they just back each other up, well knowing no one is clear, maybe afraid of losing their social status and their dirty money.

Apart from this, I hate the cliché of Italy = Mafia. There are many people who fight it everyday, who won't join them because of honour and in the name of legality, who will denounce those men, not afraid of the consequences.

Gettin' back ontopic, I'm really surprised you don't know who Julian Assange is. So just, just yes, read something about what's going on and see how pathetic the world can be when they're denuded of their fashion clothes.

Well it's kinda retarded you're talking about the head of Wiki Leaks and it's only mentioned once in 24 posts.

If you would've mentioned Wiki Leaks before than shit would be a lot more clear.

Well..lol!

Not only I assumed most of the people here knew who he is (like it's happened), but I also wanted to focus more on the man than its organization.

Besides, you could've googled it. :sohappy:

I love how the Australian government conveniently creates a task-force to find him once he announces he'll be releasing Australian documents.

Daily Beast: Assange Turns On The Guardian

Quote:
Julian Assange has started speaking in the third person: “Someone in authority clearly intended to keep Julian in prison,” he tells the Times of London in an interview in which he turns on the Guardian newspaper for its “disgusting” decision to publish details from the police report detailing claims of sexual assault against him. According to the Times of London, “Mr. Assange is understood to be particularly angry with Nick Davies, a senior reporter at the paper and former friend, for 'selectively publishing' incriminating sections of the police report, although The Guardian has made clear that the WikiLeaks founder was given several days to respond and it is known that some graphic detail of his conduct with one woman was not published.” Previously, WikiLeaks had given the Guardian early access to its big dumps this year.

I had a good laugh. Poor Assange.

He's a hero.
There are too many things we, everyone, don't know.
Information needs to spread and real faces need to be discovered.
