if the parentesis would grab the "2" it would have been the first option.. it clearly means u divide 48/2 then multiply it with (9+3)
just how i see it

Ok I guess you guys don't roam other forums, but this equation is being posted all over various sites, I do not actually need help with this, it is just that almost every forum it has been posted on 50% say 2 50% say 288.
Edit: I would love to see what you think the answer is poehalcho, and show us how you got it.
Edit 2: As you can see by the poll people are already splitting up between the 2 answers.

Edit 2: As you can see by the poll people are already splitting up between the 2 answers. 48÷2(9+3) hookies go first so 9+3 = 12 then it's just 48 / 2 * 12. just go from left to right -> 24 * 12 = 288. double checked with calculator. I must admit at the moment of the post I just rashly clicked 2 since usually when I see 2(x+y) they're in a separate part and get some kind of priority. nonetheless 15 seconds later in the bathroom I was like... wait a sec.

BIDMAS brackets indicies division multiplication addition subtraction
however + and - and also x and / are commutative, meaning order doesnt matter

look how ever you want to try put it, as you stated the brackets it will work as folling 48/2=24 (9+3)=12 therefore you could write it in simple terms as 24*(12) or just 24*12=288
not always but most of the time you should work left to right, sometimes not the case

Epic thread on this in the misc over at bb.com, is that where you got the idea?Went on for almost 90 pages and had 3000 votes.. Ended up about 50/50 between 2 and 288.
PEMDAS
Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication / Division Addition / Subtraction
You work left to right on MD and AS.
48/2(9+3) 48/2(12) 24(12) 288
An engineer, math professor, etc would never write the problem down like this in the first place.

2(9+3) = (2*9 + 2*3)
48/2(9+3) 48/(2*9 + 2*3) 48/24 2
48/2X X = 9+3 = 12 2X = 24
This is how I view it.

This is how I view it. You can't distribute that 2, it's attached to the division operator.
