So just recently I started skateboarding (2 days ago) and I've been out skating with friends who have been doing it for years.
I've stuck with the basics of just getting on and balancing on the board, and apparently I ride goofy.

I just made this thread for anyone that skateboards and can maybe give me some pointers or talk about your decks and shoes that you use.

One problem I've had so far is that I CAN'T turn right at all. Some of my friends have told me to just lean back a bit or bend my knees a bit when I ride since I'm really tall. But when I try to turn right I feel like i'm going to fall back or when I try to lift it slowly the nose will lift but I can't get it to turn right.

I can't really tell. I don't skate that well but I have experience on it and I can make a turn :P
All I can tell you is practice cause practice makes perfection! When I turn, I just feel it and it just happens. Lay a bit or blend your knees, you need practice your body balance. Yup, it's hard, so don't expect learning in less than a week. D:

Good luck mate, and be careful on it, you don't might want a broken leg or arm, don't you? :P Either way, expect painful falls.

Jaja thanks.
And so far the fun part is falling xD
I was getting on it today and I slipped fell and hit my chin in the board. I started running around like an idiot from the pain. But it was fun xD

Hehe I remember back when I was skating, one of the more serious damages I got was when I did a Nollie 3flip down from a 1.5 metres leap and the board got stuck in my pants on some way, and in panic I kicked it with the other leg so hard that on some way it made a hole in my leg, got like 7 stitches.

lol We used to have a friend that would try dub or triple Heels (can't remember what he was actually going for lol) but he would end up just spinning the board, spreading his legs wide apart, and landing with his nuts on the board which by then was end over end touching the ground... Oh that made for good laughs.. I think we got him doing that at least 5 times on film. (before the Youtube days sadly)

A little advice eh? Weird that you can't go right and you're goofy footed.. I know when I skated switch(regular foot going goofy) It was always me falling forward that I had problems with at first. You just gotta relax a bit and keep riding around and you're body will get used to it and it will come naturally and and and... Then when girls come to the park, just keep throwing the board out from under you like you're doing a 360 flip, so you look cool. (Poser)

I used to skateboard but nothing fancy... BMXing was where it was at for me...My biggest whipe out was poping a wheelie and watching my front tire fall off and roll away... I jamed the bare forks into the road and went superman over my handle bars. Face and chest full of pavement....Fun times....Shouldav taken better care of my bike.

yay finally something i can contribute to in srf!

i use to skate like 2 years ago then i torn a few ligaments in my knees and had to stop, but im longboarding recently!

hmm you should star off by learning how to ollie, try to learn it while moving makes things a lot more easier and its better than doing it standing still...

dont do drugs while skating... bad experience! :soosad:

to add to the above video "leaning back" is not really the apropriate way of saying it,
you need to balance your center of gravity over the center of the board, this will make the feet pressure a lot easier. you dont need huge forces to turn the board (get someone who knows how to skate to check your trucks to make sure the turning is actually possible xD)

This is what happened to my knee =( tore my ACL right in half... damn 4wheelers...

I was more into BMX than skating, so I just kept doing that cuz it was less strain on the knees

I've been skating since i was like 10, and stopped 3 years ago (im 15 now), you just gotta get used to it, and practice a lot. Of course you won't be a pro in a few days (im still pretty bad at it lol) but its quite fun once you can ride around town, and just not give a ****.

P.S. I found it pretty easy to learn how to ride a skateboard. I remember when i bough Heely's or w/e, that sucked monkey balls, trying to learn on those lol. First 3 days were very painful.

wide flat shoes are best imo, get your jump/ollie down to a fine art learn the movements for that as its the basic move which all other stunts come off

so ollie is

tilt your board back and in 1 swift motion as you tilt it slide your front foot forward to the top of the board this will make it level out mid air, from that slide your front food either side of the board to do a kick flip but just learn the ollie i used to spend hours doing it was all i could do but i was happy to say i was good at it xD i quit boarding many years ago now i do miss it though, if you find balancing hard try learning the ollie while standing stil when you feel you can control it add some slow movement try jumping up a small step or a curb

This video must be for people with almost no athletic ability which is almost impossible. You can actually get the hang of it without being shown. Yes you're gonna fall but even Tony hawk falls. Just practice standing on the thing then practice moving. Anyone who spend lots of time playing outdoors as a kid have no problem getting it down after a while. Again...this video must be for the ultra nerdy basement dwellers.

^^dino is right people in skateparks tend to be quite social not all but you go to hang out with friends and have fun so if you ask them a question im sure atleast 1 will be willing to help very least its an icebreaker if you want to skate a lot its more fun to do it with people you know and i always found making friends at skateparks easy you share a common interest, its also fun to watch some of the better people pull off tricks

*bump*
Update :D
I can turn both right and left with no problems now. I can make hard turns to the left working on hard right turns now.
I have also started to learn how to manual and have started learning how to Ollie.
I've tried going down the quarter pipe once but fell lol.

Injury: I tried doing a hard left turn while going up the quarter pipe but failed, I dislocated my left shoulder but it popped back in like nothing.
It felt awesome :D

Edit: And yes I have become a whole lot more social, some of the younger (10-17) and older (17+++) have all helped me and given me tips on how to ride better. Their all surprisingly cool and don't make fun of you for failing like one would expect

Good to hear. Now you just need to learn how to ollie and you really have to be comfortable about falling on your ass if you are going to continue. I haven't been skateboarding for like 7+ years now so I can't say I remember much about it but just make sure you don't bust your nut when trying to do an ollie. I had one friend who was tried to do a kick flip before me mastered doing an ollie and he ended up busting his balls...I literally ended up on the floor laughing my ass off.

Good luck. :)

*I tried to go snowboarding over the winter break. It was fun but I have to say that my experience skateboarding was not that much help except maybe for the fact that I can be ballsy and take a fall and I have no problem as far as balancing goes (either stance). Also, I'm a natural goofy too

Haha, something similiar happened to me back when I was skating. Tried to do an airwalk flat, which may not be the smartest and the nose popped up in my nuts, friends was laughing while I was laying on the ground trying to catch my breath. :soosad:

Wow... Squirt are you me?!! I just recently started skateboarding and it is fantastic. I'm trying to get my ollie down and make it a little higher. Skateboarding is all about practice man. Just go out for a few hours and have some fun and always try and challenge yourself.

I an in the exact position as you and let me know if you want any tips on what I have learned and visa versa.

i strongly suggest you steer clear of videos although they may explain it well its a whole world different in real, learn in the company of others who can spot where your going wrong as sometimes you think your doing it right but infact are not.

Also once you got movement down ollie is the most important thing you need to learn its the core of most moves, not only that if your racing around its handy to be able to ollie up a curb or few steps rather then having to stop or worse bail

Couldn't agree more. Practise the ollie first, then move on to getting it down while riding. You'll get there eventually.
