Lol I'll give this article to one to one of my paranoid type schizophrenic patients. For Lithium to actually work, it has to reach therapeutic blood levels (and stay below 1.5mEq/ml) and it doesn't exactly work for everyone. It actually wasn't put into standard use in the US until 1970s (20 years after its therapeutic effect was discovered) due to reports of fatalities. I don't think people understand that medications are not magic pills -- taking a beta-blocker now will not prevent cardiac problems later on.

Hmm isn't this similar to water fluoridation? What do you guys think about that? Since the effects of fluoride are only topical and isn't helpful when ingested; do you think its really necessary for states to treat their water systems with fluoride?

You're actually comparing the effects of fluoride with lithium? Not even close. You don't really hear a lot of people complaining about Vit. D in their milk.

***sidenote: mEq/L I meant. Actually reviewing meds and I just took another peek at lithium lol.

I've looked into fluoride and is fairly established that it couses damage to the human body and provides no real benefit in the dental field, lithium seems to be the same way althouwgh I am not the best person to ask about for the time being, I am ignoring the effect of both in the human mind in this comment.

Vit. D in my milk ? I do very much mind, why ? because in a great deal of places is "practically" illegal to buy raw milk which contains more nutrients that the bullshit usually sold at the stores. If I want something my money will go to it, thats the short version of it really.

Completely contrary to my dentist's advice as well as my Nutrition/Medical-Surgical textbook but any element, when ingested at high levels, causes harm to the body. Fluoride deficiency is actually connected with tooth decay (again, based on my textbook readings). I am aware that there are conflicting studies and that fluoride is not completely harmless but you also need to understand that the therapeutic level of Lithium (0.6 - 1.2 and a toxicity level of >1.5mEq/L) is quite narrow and is truly non-beneficial for people without symptoms of mania (not depression). In addition, there is no known antidote for Lithium toxicity and it is a psychiatric (antimanic) drug.

Fortifying vitamin D in milk is in no way connected to that. Vit. D helps in the absorption of Ca and that's pretty much the only reason for adding it.

The government allows businesses to 'monopolize' the marketing of certain products because it means more tax money. Making the selling of raw products (such as marijuana or in this case, milk) illegal is part of it but can be (conspiracy theory?) justified by implying regulation of safety for the consumers. Yes, but I still believe that vit. D has nothing to do with this -- we still have milk that are not fortified with vit. D in the market, correct?

Anyway, as far as lithium and fluoride in the water goes, aside from the obvious dangers of adding lithium to regular tap water, I also have to add that the effects of both are on two distinct realms. One of them acts on the physiological aspect (health benefits) whereas the other affects the emotional/cognitive state of a person. I think most people can at least agree that this completely changes the argument for adding certain substances to our water.

If there's conflicting studies then why bother to use state money to fluoridate our water supply? To add the evident contradictions: "The American Dental Association supplement schedule shows that fluoride prescription drugs should not be given to infants under 6 months of age. One cup of water per day for children age 6 months to 3 years matches the supplement controlled dose. Therefore, in fluoridated areas, most children under 3 are getting an overdose of this drug via their drinking water, yet the ADA continues to recommend fluoridation." Also the flouride used in our drinking water isn't naturally occurring calcium fluoride(which the studies pro fluoride use) but are from Silicofluorides.

yea the effects are different but the point is that both are considered to treat our drinking water because companies get to make a profit and "safely" dispose of their waste products.

Yes, at least one of the fluoride compounds used for drinking water is a factory by-product, however, it is not the only form of compound used for water fluoridation and it is still effective. The benefits of fluoridation, whether it is naturally-occurring or controlled, remains the same - regardless of its form or compound, according to the ADA. CDC's recommendation still remains in favor of water fluoridation. Although I strongly encourage people to keep questioning the majority or the general consensus as long as their arguments are backed up with facts, the presented evidence against this practice is still insufficient.

And I still completely disagree that comparing the addition of fluoride and lithium to water is a valid comparison, even from that standpoint. The mainstream reason (not your conspiracy theorist claim) of fluoridation of water touches on the physiological benefits whereas lithium is on a completely different field. To say that the reason for 'disposing' both of them is mainly for profit and convenience of companies is an unsupported (by facts) claim.
