I'm pretty versatile when it comes to music - everything from classical to rock to rap. But there's just way too much garbage these days on the mainstream market to sort through.

the problem is you're only looking at mainstream music.
Define "mainstream" anyway.
I've been listening to Neon Trees, Cage the Elephant, Blink-182, Incubus, Death Cab For Cutie - on the alt stations. On BPM it's definitely more mainstream but stuff like Deadmau5 tends to be my favorite type.
The longer music evolves, the less "alternative" music there will be. And who can forget the Art of Noise, Yes, Kraftwerk, REM, Clash, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Alan Parsons Project, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, ELO, etc? A lot of "alt" or "out there" or "indie" acts had so much effect that their stuff became mainstream.
I don't care much for rap although there are standouts in that field too, and slowcore is - well, too damn slow. Coldplay = go away.
A good jazz/fusion mix is somewhat hard to find in this area, that's why I have sat radio. I'm constantly exploring new channels to see what's out there. But if you mean the stuff that's on the radio is pretty much mainstream - I guess.

I think people misunderstood what he meant, even after clarifying it. His statement is not the same as saying "mainstream music is garbage"; from what I understand, he's just implying that people need to look elsewhere - to broaden their sources - when it comes to finding new tunes. I have a few songs on my list that are/were on the "mainstream" group but that doesn't mean I like every song that plays on the radio these days (I actually find most of them to be annoying garbage).
These days, mainstream music usually means: auto-tune female singers, underage "tween" pop stars, or the typical (electronic+rap+auto-tune+repetitive catch phrase) that the mass majority can't seem to get enough of. I find it ridiculous that some people are able to listen to this crap for hours but hey, everyone's different.

Makes total sense to me. Ugh, in that case I don't listen to much "mainstream" music
