Hey Everyone,

So i ordered my computer (yay!). It's on it's way, but right now i just need to get myself a copy of Window's 7.

Now, through Student Discounts and all that, i can get an "Upgrade" copy of Windows 7 for about 60-70 bucks. Which is pretty awesome. However, i just have 1 problem.

Currently the only OS which i have access to is the Win7 32bit that is installed on my laptop, and the Vista 32 that was originally installed on my laptop, but i still have the Boot Disk.

I need a 64bit copy of Win 7, so i was wondering. Would it be a good idea to purchase a Win7 64 upgrade disk, and install either the Win7 32 or Vista 32 on my new PC, then "upgrade" it to 64?

I read that you could do this from the Microsoft Webpage, it just said that it would have to be a fresh install, so backup my files, but since it's a fresh computer i wont have files to back up.

What are your guys thoughts? Also, there won't be a problem with me having 1 copy of windows installed on 2 computers right? Even if it's just for a little bit whilst i upgrade to 64.

Thanks!

Go to ur local computer store, ask for a w7 64bit cd (we give those dvd's for free)
install using the upgrade key

http://www.winsupersite.com/article/win ... rade-media

ps: u can't upgrade 32bit to 64bit
pss: not sure about the 1key on 2 pc's; as long as only one is connected to
the internet, u should be fine.
Don't know about 2 at the same time

vista 32 -> w7 64 should go fine.
I did xp32 -> w7 64 myself, so it's no problem. And don't worry about the validation process. it's not like it'll have internet access while installing windows just to check if the code has been used elsewhere.

So Razor,

I should just buy the Upgrade CD for the Key, and get a Win 7 dvd from any shop and just use that as the CD key? Aren't Keys and CDs paired up?

Sounds like that would be a good idea, i just need to find someone who is kind enough to give me a Windows 7 CD

Yep,
I had the same system at my school.
65€ for W7 Ultimate upgrade
got a key by email
and a link to download a w7 iso
downloaded the iso
it said upgrade, but i could do a clean install with it
the upgrade key won't work when doing a clean install in the windows setup, so just skip it :P
just follow: http://www.winsupersite.com/article/win ... rade-media
to activate it afterwards with the upgrade key

Key-J wrote:

key = determines what windows version (home premium, pro, ulti) it is, doesn't matter from what medium it is installed (cd, dvd, usb stick, ...)
Some cd's will only allow u to install one type of windows, but mostly these are cd's that come
with a computer or laptop from a brand (hp, dell, acer, msi, ...)
and even those can be altered by creating an iso & then changing a config file :)

I think the cd u will get with the upgrade key will allow a clean install :)
If not, just go to a local pc shop and ask if they can give u a windows 7 64bit dvd(with SP1 preferably) - just the dvd
We always give those dvd's when people ask for it, but different places = different rules/behavior

^This, I wasn't aware anyone still paid for MS iffy software. I've been burnt way too many times by them to continue funding them. :soosad:

Thanks Razor, ill look into doing that.

And i dono, i don't mind "finding" some software, but with OSes i prefer having something legit.
