Anyone have any good recommendations for a gaming rig? Nothing too crazy, but at least a quad core processor, decent graphics card, and I'm fine with 500gb of hardrive.

Someone mentioned Alienware, but I hear that's over priced BS. But I went ahead and "built" my own PC, for the hell of it.

Alienware: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=DPDOXQ1f&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&model_id=alienware-x51

Dell: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dxcwmn1&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&model_id=xps-8300

So, yeah, thoughts? =]

P.S. My ideal price range would be like $500-$800. But I'm flexible.

Make your own or you're over paying.

I'd rethink the 6450, unless you don't mind playing every modern game on low and really old games on medium. The 555 is a lot better. Dunno what the processor is on the dell, but if you bump up the graphics to at least 2 lvls on that check list thing then you should be fine. Processor never bottlenecks on medium detail anyways.

Ah, good point. I'll do that then, assuming I even get this.

And about building, I could probably have a friend do it, but eh, too much effort.

Pipe down with your laziness. The effort is minimal. It takes maybe 4 hours total from when you get home with all the parts to have a fully working computer with drivers installed ready to go.

The difference is ridiculous. I built a $900 computer earlier in March which included an ATI 6870, a 60gb SSD and an i5 2500k. A comparable pre built would probably cost you $1500 or more..

Consider buying the pc/parts on a site like craiglist, prizes there are insanely cheap often.

It's not hard and you'll get far more of a bang for your buck. $800 on a prebuilt is like a $450 built by you. In fact Gaige offers a great proposal even with his pricey $50 service fee. Also buying windows? Hahaha and no I'm not trying to imply pirating it. I'm implying your college should offer it at a very high discount or free.

Considering you want a gaming desktop.. uh I suggest you to stay away from most prebuilts that isn't made by let's say something like cyberpower. I also would suggest building it yourself. It's like legos.

I built my own PC like ~5 years ago and I regret going for a 'medium' pc when like 200 euro's more couldve gotten me a beast.
Buying from someone in another part of the world who you only know from a forum may not be the most advisable course for buying a PC, but I think his setup for the pc seems legit. I'd really consider spending a little bit more and getting a PC that will really last you.

not always. companies like dell get huge discounts for mass ordering parts. its down to a matter of personal preference really.

Just because they get a discount it doesn't mean they are going to pass it to you.

In the 7~ years that I've been interested in hardware, I've not once come across a deal that couldn't be better if I built it myself. If you could point me in the direction of a deal that was equally as good or better than one I could build myself then by all means..do share and I'll reconsider my stance.

Gaige's idea interests me. I may take him up on it. /inb4scem

I would like to find a decent computer that's already constructed, simply because having someone like Gaige, or myself build one would just be a hassle.

Open up a phone book, look for a PC shop, and go over there to ask if they'll put your computer together for a small fee that is if you don't want to play legos in building your PC. If you want to have it as a gaming PC just.. don't. Don't. You're killing me =[

Just so you know the dell PC will not be able to play any games even at minimal settings. It's worse than the 9800GT by far if that gives you an idea how bad it is.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

And the Alienware uses a card that they don't sell which is far better than the other choice, but what if I said that cyberpower PC can build you one for the same price, but with a 7850. Refer to the chart where they places at Only problem is that it'll be ~$1000 that doesn't include rebates. Building it yourself would probably be around $850.

Now I have never used cyberpower, but I was looking at it when I was going to buy a new computer. Instead I said **** it and built my own. They also sell prebuilts.

Seriously, building your own PC "allows you to have the computer you want" Isn't that right?

Tasdik, you can also exclude Windows 7 if you just want to use linux

That gives you room for a $200 video card

If you want a gaming PC you have to be willing to pay. There is no budget gaming PC. You get what you pay for, and if you can't dish out an extra $50 or $75 for major parts like a CPU or GPU then you shouldn't be looking for a gaming PC. I'm not trying to be rude here, I'm just sick of people expecting an awesome gaming PC when all they want to spend is next to nothing.

maybe for a decent GAMING like GAMING PC should be at least 1kUSD, but if you want an OK gaming PC, then 500-800.

correct me: is all about processor, ram and video card?
