Until Thursday, the U.S. government had never publicly acknowledged the existence of Area 51—a remote spot in the Nevada desert that has long been associated with conspiracy theories, alien sightings, and talk of tiny spaceships.(See exclusive pictures from Area 51.)

But a newly declassified CIA document—which was written in 1992—shows a map labeled with the name of the remote land parcel, 75 miles from Las Vegas, used to test and develop top-secret U.S. military projects, including the U-2 spy plane. (Related: "How Area 51 Held Secret Craft.")

To learn more about Area 51 and the new information released by the government, we turned to Annie Jacobsen, an investigative journalist and the author of Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base.

What was in this massive 400-page document that was declassified on Thursday?

Very little of it is actually new information. Only one page out of the 400 pages is new information. The rest of the report has been declassified for years. And I know this because I used large parts of it to write about the different surveillance programs that existed at Area 51.

So what's actually new?

What's new is that the National Security Archive at George Washington University filed a Freedom of Information Act request on a page of the document and it was declassified.

It is a map that says Area 51 on it. That really is news—what it means is that a jealously guarded secret—the existence of an area called Area 51, which the government refused to acknowledge the existence of—actually exists.

How was Area 51 referred to in other documents?

Whenever it was described, the words "Area 51" were covered in black ink. No one in the government would talk about what everyone else already knew.

What's interesting is that these incredible spy programs happened out there. The CIA has been declassifying documents about Area 51 since the 1990s, but they have always been told or directed not to reveal the name.

Why do you think that is?

It is still a mystery. I maintain that the Atomic Energy Commission was doing programs out there that required a much higher level of security clearance and those programs had a much higher degree of classification. (Learn more about Area 51 on the National Geographic Channel.)

What's in the rest of the document—the part that was already declassified?

It discusses various programs that existed out at Area 51. One of the first CIA drones ever created was flown out of Area 51 in the 1950s. It looked like a giant eagle and was meant to spy on Soviet hydrofoils that were being hidden in the Caspian Sea.

Why did people think that Area 51 housed alien spaceships?

A lot of it was because of the U-2 planes program that started out of Area 51 in 1955. The U-2 planes were used extensively by the U.S. during the Cold War for reconnaissance missions. They flew at an altitude of 60,000 feet (18 meters)—considerably higher than any other plane in existence at the time.

As soon as test flights began, people wrote letters to their congressmen and to their local mayors saying, "I saw a UFO." But what they saw was the U-2 spy plane.

Why did they mistake the U-2 plane for a UFO?

Two reasons. One, it had an almost vertical takeoff. Anyone who happened to see it gaining altitude would have thought it was very unusual.

The second reason is that it flew so high. At the time, no one believed that airlines could fly that high. Commercial flights were flying 20,000 feet (6 kilometers) in the air. If you saw [a U-2 plane], you were going to think it was a UFO.

Why are we so fascinated with Area 51?

I call it the grassy knoll of Nevada. So many stories surrounded it. People clamor to read about it. It makes it exciting to report on.

What about area 91..? or area 62, or area X, or Y and Z?...maybe even area 2x-((3x/92)+5b-2i)..? What dumb sheep still focusing on area 51 when there are so many things that could be going on behind closed doors elsewhere by the government....Why even bother?..

Nothing new... But what's so important about the name that they needed to hide it anyways?
The U-2 explanation seems kinda dumb.

So that people would focus on area 51 instead of figuring out the really important stuff?

lol, if you can see it, name it and whatever else...chances are it's their for this very reason! the real shit is hidden underground, even under the ocean there are reports of craft flying out and into the water.

its the same with nasa, they show us rockets to fly humans to space........like literally a huge tank full of gas....set on fire abd boom...into space....yeah right! then why are these astronaughts being followed into space by more advanced craft with free energy propulsion which can destroy these rockets in terms of speed. the true space travel is unknown to us, the ufo sightings are likely these very crafts, i fulky expect that we have seriously surpassed rockets as our way of getting into space! it cant be publicly known though, as then every person will have access to space, and thats likely not in their interest from a control perspective.

^Why fixing if it ain't broken?
But really, just because rockets are "old" (developed long time ago) doesn't mean they're useless. They're probably best or the most profitable mean of getting into space, otherwise they wouldn't use them.

Getting out of earth's atmosphere takes over 9000 times more energy than flying in space, simple as that.

thats the logic behind this ancient method of getting into space. many astronaughts have reported being followed from the earths atmosphere into space by a single flying object, which is far more agile and faster. btw, i dont believe these are aliens....they are human craft, just more advanced and not publicly known. you have to just believe reports i suppose, i personally believe we have more advanced space craft than the frontline nasa method. i also believe nasa are not even the true scope of our total space program. controlling space has been priority since the 60's and if we do have more advanced craft, its certainly within national security to keep it quite, and let the world believe we simply use rockets and the gravitational force of the moon and planets!

dont they use the gravity of planets to boost faster in certain directions? or is that sattelites lol, think i may have got confused on that lol! like orbit around the planet and then be repelled in a desired direction etc

Yeah, gravity slingshot, I thought you were saying they're using the gravity of moon and other planets to leave Earth.

no im not that dumb lol! byt yeah, gravity assist to conserve enery when in space. rockets to leave earth. both fairly conservative methods for the supposed height of human technology for space travel. especially when you even take into account some craft within earths atmosphere recorded by legit radar and flight control guys as travelling at over 70k mph, thats fighting against gravity, not in space. think they have been recorded faster too, but i guess you can research it if you have the time lol.

If you come from space in an angle you can use earths gravity to accelerate to quite high speeds using the slingshot method, yes. But I don't believe that anything we can create could be going with that kind of a speed fighting against gravity, starting from 0 and going straight up like the rockets do. :p

Also, I would like to see why you believe that there is some more advanced technology in space travel.

because i believe in that over aliens....lol is it so hard to believe there is more than we know since the 60's? and there are definatly 'ufo's' on a technological level, not freaksmof nature or meteors etc. so many legit pilots have reported stuff following them, especially the military and many high ranking guys. the other stuff we can do is amazing so i believe rockets are not the cutting edge at all! 1969 when we went to the moon is even reported to be followed by something!
