For a long time now I have planned to get a tattoo but I haven't committed to getting one yet since I can't think of anything to get done that will have any meaning. I am starting to think about just getting something out of a shops line book so I can get myself past getting a really meaningful tattoo. Am I the only one who feels like getting a tattoo without a meaning behind it ruins part of it?

I think at the end of the day, its your choice. My first tattoo, had meaning, but 10 years on, that meaning was lost and now I've had it covered up. With all my tattoos (i have , they've all got meaning, and things that i am passionate about in my life. I've got more planned for the future as well.

Don't do it just for lolz. In my opinion, it has to have some meaning or something.

To the people that are saying wait, and go for something meaningful, i bet you haven't got any tattoos, and if you have, you've probably only got the one. But also if you like something, i also will say just go for it. The only don't i will say, is no girlfriend names, no portraits, no stupid Disney cartoon characters, also don't go for something big, as everyone's pain threshold is different, and the pain might be too much.

Okay so I'll ask this, do you see a tattoo of a cross that someone got because a family member died as a tattoo that has meaning.

I've got four tattoos personally, and I could never walk into a shop and pick a piece off the wall or from a book and say "Tattoo that on me." My rule, and I've said it before in other tattoo threads, is that I have to have the idea for at least a year before I consider making an appointment with the artist. I have a friend who has I think nine tattoos now, with only one having any meaning and the rest coming from the wall or from a book, and he looks like a walking bumper sticker. I think careful consideration of what you want, where you want it, and who you want it done by is more important than getting a tattoo just because.

Art is art. Some art looks aesthetically pleasing and has little to no substance. Some art may be obscure and displeasing to look at, but is riddled with metaphor and depth. Some art has the best of both worlds. If you can look at it and it invokes a form of emotion out of you then it's doing it's job.

Don't get so obsessed with meaning. Just get something that you like. As one of my favorite tattoo artists said, it's about "capturing the moment" rather than something with deep meaning for you. In the long run, things that you like do represent your personality or at least your mood when you had it done. If you really like it, go for it. If you're not too sure on what to get but have a vague idea of what you want as the focal point, any professional artist's job is to guide you through it and design the piece for you. If they can't do that, they're not artists -- just a guy/girl with a needle and some ink. The only reason I only have one right now (although a slightly large one) is because my artist has a long waiting list and costs a Farking fortune. Saying "I wanted to get a tattoo for the longest time" is not the same as "I got a tattoo that I wanted for a long time". Get it. EDIT: When I say "get something that you like", I don't mean just pick a random tattoos from the wall (heart with MOM for example) just because you want to get one. Things you might regret: vulgar nude women, your girlfriend/wife's name/portrait, cartoon characters, tribal tattoos, sticker-like animal tattoos, random flower, penis drawing, certain typography tattoos, Chinese/Japanese "symbols", Yin-Yang. Cliche Tattoos of White people dicking with Asian shit: Reasons to invest in a good artist:

Personally I'd say that if you're so unsure about getting a tatoo that you have to post on an internet forum to form you decision, I'd say don't do it. It's something that you gotta want without the hesitation else you'll do something stupid in that mindset (from experience) inky wrote: Cliche Tattoos of White people dicking with Asian shit: Reasons to invest in a good artist: Also if you DO decide to get a tatoo. . .DO NOT get any asian shit, or stuff in a language that you aren't 100% fluent in on you. 1) you'll look stupid 100% of the time. 2) you won't really know what the words mean. For example unless that you/tatoo artist are 100% fluent in the meaning of Chinese Kanji, the meaning WILL be mis-interpreted, and you'll be looking like an idiot to people who can actually read the language, Some guy wanted beef cake in Kanji written on his muscles, and what was actually written was "Meat Man" (I can read about 300 of the 10,000+ Kanji) Also when I live in East Asia, I saw an asian guy with "LOVE PEACE POWER" tatooed on his arm. It looked rediculous. . .and I realized. . .that's what people look like when they tatoo other languages on their arm because they think it looks cool. I've seen other example of #1 and realized that these people look pretty stupid. Like having the Kanji for "Love" tatooed on you . . .once you've seen that particular character in everyday life for five years, seeing it tatooed on someone really looks retarded. It would be a lot better to get a decent artist and have some awesome picture/art tatted on you. Also you have to get it done in a way that you can get other employment if you need to.

For example, I don't like to choose a name for something (like a SRO char), because I'm probably not going to like it later. I've had that alot. Can I ask why you guys are against cartoon characters? Personally, I grew up watching the Rugrats and I would easily get Chuckie or Tommy Pickles tattooed on me for the reason that that show was a huge part of my childhood.
