Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro:
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/id ... -pro/?tt=d

Macbook Air 13 inch:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,24 ... ?tab=Specs

Preferences:
Budget: ~$1000
Haswell 4th gen processor i5
6 hours battery life at least
at least 128 SSD (SSD is absolute)
at least 4GB
Quality display IPS

The thing that I actually do like is the convertible factor of the yoga 2 pro which would be very useful for me when I'm just standing or in bed.
But the mac book air gets 12hrs whereas the yoga 2 gets 6hrs.

Any advice?

Not really a huge fan of Mac so I can't give any unbiased opinion about that. As for Lenovo, just make sure the product has good warranty because their cheaper models tend to break easily.

Around that price, I'd advice getting an Asus G series laptop mainly because I've had experience with it. I've had mine for about 2 years and never had problems with heating or hardware malfunction. The laptop can be placed on top of a bed and never overheat. The only downside is that some people might find it to be too huge.

for the extra 170 you could probably just buy a better battery for your lenovo and fix your battery issue.
With that said, 6 hours should be plenty.
My laptop dies in less than an hour in powersave mode and I've managed to get by in socket depraved classrooms for over a year now...

I have the Samsung ultra S series, I have had it for roughly 5 months now. I like it a lot. I have the 3rd gen intel i5 processor, 8gb sddr3 ram, 128gb ssd, intel hd4000 graphics, and it's plenty enough, with well over 6hours of battery, I can peacefully leave the house in the morning at 9am and come back home at 5pm without carrying my charger. I have two 3hour classes a day.

Cons:
No backlit keyboard
Does tend to get hot
128gb fills up really quickly (it has a USB 3.0 port so I bought a 1TB external HDD USB 3.0 which compensates)

Very true. I had Lenovo G series (or something), by a month the left hinge was lose but I put off getting it fixed (I tried to got to their online customer service and it was shite). By a year later when the warranty was gone, the left hinge totally came off, then another month later the monitor totally stopped working -.-. I tried to fix it by opening the back, at which point it caught on fire (<- my fault, it was still turned on), so now I'm writing everything on a iPad ~,~

This alone " I tried to fix it by opening the back, at which point it caught on fire" says no to me.....
