Am I the only one who thinks that bail for people who make a shit ton should be higher than that of a lower income person?

Reason I ask is, Justin Beiber just got released on $2.5k bail. Now for me, that'd hurt quite a bit. But for him, it doesn't even matter.

I feel like bail should be based off your income somehow. $250k for justin sounds a lot more fair than 2.5k .

Thoughts?

No.... Basing it on the severity of the crime would be/is appropriate...

DUI, or something.

1k for a DUI? I mean, it's good no one got hurt, but people could've died.

I feel like instead of punishing for the crime committed, they should set bail for what COULD have happened.

(Aka, Vehicular homicide)

That wouldn't be fair.. "COULD have happen" has multiple interpretations/possibilities...He could have crashed in a gas station and it blew up killing many...He could have crashed in a house full of people...or a school bus....He could hit one person... Which one of these "COULD have happen" would be used to set bail..or should all of them be used...because they seem endless...

You don't even know what happened but you're up in arms about it just because it's Justin Beiber.

I skimmed.

"(CNN) -- Justin Bieber was charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest and driving without a valid license after police saw the pop star street racing early Thursday morning, "

Close enough.

I was under the impression that it was based on your income, guess not.

Btw, JB farked up but he farked up like any other 20 years old would. Not saying that driving under the influence isn't a big deal but let's not add more unfounded hatred towards him just because he's a pop star.

As if Beiber should have a bail option to begin with.

I think bail is bs all together sometimes. You commit a crime, such a vandalizing someones home, and there's evidence, and you get arrested, you should have to be in jail, you shouldn't be able to just bail your way out.

Why not? They both serve as punishment. If you're not doing to well financially a bail is probably one of the last things you want to happen.

Bingo, both are meant to avoid repetition. And as OP said, why would JB care if bail is only 2.5k. I think it would be a good idea to scale it according to someones average income.

But following your exact statement, shouldn't he feel the punishment as equally hard as your average teenager? If a celebrity earns 100 times as much as your average teenager, why shouldn't the bill/punishment be a hundred times bigger? That way, no matter how much money you have, it will still feel as a punishment.
Would make sense.

If JB had to pay 100k+ bail money it still doesn't guarantee he will learn his lesson....To most rich people money is no object....The cash in their bank account is nothing compared to their ability to make money...That's where true wealth lies....

So they should break his nose as punishment, or cut his vocal cords, or break a knee cap.
Not serious, but maybe ;)

Yeah that's what I said in my first sentence, I agree that it should scale relative to your income. I'm just saying people shouldn't give him more shit than any other young guy doing stupid shit just because he's under the spotlight.

Money matters to everyone.

You just have to increase the amount for certain people.

Should be based on the severity of the crime and then have an additional charge (or none) depending on your income.

Too many people with money that feel like their punishment is less severe when it comes to paying bail or a fine; so they feel like they can get away with something easier.
Case and point: The 16 year old kid who had a rich family and ended up drinking and driving and killing like 5 people or something. Although the additional income-based charge doesn't apply to this case because he makes no income).

Again true riches isn't money itself but the ability to earn lots of money...Someone who is rich making passive income from all their investments probably doesn't really care too much if they loose a few dollars in a one time incident when it can easily be replaced...Attack their investments and that's when they have a problem....So you're idea of sticking it to them where you think it hurts is a joke...

Also what happens if some teenager of some wealthy bastard breaks the law? who's income will the bail be based on?... If the kid doesn't really have any income does he go free?... Can't charge his parents if they didn't commit a crime...What about a hobo on the street what should his bail be set at?...Does no income means he's free until his court date?...This whole idea is nonsense..

Perhaps they should increase the amount you're taxed by the crimes you commit.

<- Clearly has no understanding of law.

Anyways, in regards to this story, my gf was a big fan of Justin Beiber when he had his mop hair. I told her he's just going to become a male version of Lindsay Lohan or something, and look at him now. This is the beginning of the end of his career.

I have more a problem with the fact you can pay to not face the consequences of "special" behavior.

IIRC, bail is based on the crime, earnings, and whether a person is a flight risk or not. I doubt Bieber is much of a flight risk, partly because even if he does run, it would take 5 seconds to find him.
