Are we giving up on marriage... too easily? Scared to put a ring on it? What do you think?

I have no problems when it comes to marriage as long as a prenup is in place, I need to look into the details of the prenup before finalizing the statement however.

In my opinion it's not really needed (at least not in manner it is carried out today)...It doesn't really change a person from who they are at their core (doesn't make them a better person)...Also all the monetary aspects and legalities that surrounds it today sorta devalues it's meaning....Celebrating your union is fine but opting for the institutionalized route is a waste and a joke...That's just how I view it...

Marriage means being... exclusive with one person for the rest of your life. So why not!
Btw: What about, unmarried couples.. wills if someone dies ? Well, Unmarried partners do not, inherit from each other automatically the way married couples do.

You don't have to be married to be committed to one person for the rest of your life.

Tasdik wrote: You don't have to be married to be committed to one person for the rest of your life. True. But I think that for a lot of people, there's a psychological difference between just "having a girlfriend" or "having a wife"? I know that it doesn't apply to everyone, but it seems that people are generally more devoted when married. But instead of talking about whether or not you have to be married to be committed, I would rather talk about the people who do get married but break up over nothing. As you also mentioned in the first post, BlackFox, I DO think that many give up on marriage all too easily (I'm not necessarily only referring to people who are actually married, but just in general people who agree to live the rest of their lives together - married or not). It might be an effect of the way society has evolved these past decades, or maybe it has always been like this, but it seems that people don't even want to fight anymore. They don't want to fight for the marriage they're in, because it's simply just easier to give up! Of course there are marriages that may have been a mistake, and that's fine. But in Denmark, 43% of all marriages end in divorce, which usually isn't very fun for either part (especially not if there are children involved). 43%! That is nearly half of all marriages! The fact that the divorce-rate has been rising so much during the past decade alone, comes to show that maybe people are simply becoming less committed to each other. But why? There are probably many explanations. But feel free to dive in with yours?

I know that it doesn't apply to everyone, but it seems that people are generally more devoted when married. There is a culturally imposed belief that it is better to have a wife as oppose to a girlfriend (especially at older ages and your mother being your dad's girlfriend doesn't sit right with most) and this plays into a social status game...a perception game...and often times too much attention is given to the perception (marriage status) and the real meaning of the relationship is overlooked...
Marriage itself is not the reason why people fall apart and it isn't the real reason why they got together so its not really necessary...The only real value about marriage is that its an elaborate form of expressing a feeling...Its a byproduct of something more real that can be expressed in a myriad of other ways...

So ... many... ellipses...
I don't care whether people get married vs. whether they are just together. I think all the legal benefits/subsidies that married couples get should be removed
Personally I would like to get married if there was someone I deeply cared about, but as a more traditional/cultural sense than legal. I also wouldn't mind not being married if there was no one out there.

I see it more as a business transaction between two people. With all the legal and monetary stuff that comes with it, both good and bad, it would take a very special someone to jump into that with.
I wouldn't mind being married later on when I'm more financially stable and well off, but I'm in no rush to marry the first lady that I find.
Plus I think the rings that guys wear are way cool and I'd love to have that on my finger at work and shit.
