My most anticipated game this year comes out August 21 on the PC and 360.

Who is developing the game?

BioShock is being developed by Irrational Games. Both the Quincy (USA) and Canberra (Australia) studios are involved in the project.

Irrational's previous form includes System Shock 2, Swat 4 & expansion, and Freedom Force 1 & 2

What kind of game is BioShock?

BioShock is a First Person Shooter. Irrational are hoping to redefine what a 'shooter' is with BioShock.

RAPTURE IS REAL...

In the first half of the 20th century an industrialist by the name of Andrew Ryan, built an underwater utopia called Rapture.

Rapture was populated by the world's best and the brightest and was seen as an unbridled success. A undetermined period of time later a new species of sea slug that secreted stem cells was discovered in the ocean surrounding Rapture.
This allowed the inhabitants of Rapture to enhance physical and mental capabilities and to heal old wounds.
These stem cells, known as Adam, became so sought after that a war to control the substance broke out between Andrew Ryan and one of Adam's original discoverers, a scientist named Fontaine.

The war was eventually won by Ryan, however the population, having modified themselves to survive the war, was changed forever. They were now addicted to Adam and depended on it for their survival.

The game starts as the player's airplane crash lands in the ocean near Rapture ten years after society collapsed.

Creative director Ken Levine walked us through the second demo of BioShock, the first-person-shooter, RPG, action-adventure psychological thriller genre-bending whatchamacallit. This time around, Levine wanted to focus on the combat, a system that he says will redefine shooters, a system in which choice is key.

With six different modifiable weapons, with different types of ammunition, and about 50 genetic powers to enhance your hunt-or-be-hunted skills, you bet you have a choice. The demo started out in one of the early levels of the game in the medical building. Walking in, Joe encountered a friendly nurse, clad in starched-white uniform. The nurse, known as a splicer for altering her genetic structure, then tried to kill Joe with a combination of fireballs and teleporting. She also needs to work on her bedside manner.

Joe blasted the wench with his shotgun and pistol, dodging here genetically-engineered fireballs. The explosive blasts showed off BioShock's dynamic fire system. A bush burned and the flames spread slowly to the surrounding walls. You could even line up pieces of wood and debris and bottles of liquor, a line that acts as a fuse to, say, a crate of dynamite for an explosive trap.

But this was no fire demo. Joe next tried to come between a Big Daddy - the hulking protectorates clad in giant iron deep see diving suits - and a Little Sister, the creepy little girls that consume and process Adam, the currency of Rapture used to upgrade your looks, physical skills and your ability to, say, shoot a hive of deadly wasps out of your arm as projectile weapons. In Rapture, you have to scrounge for ammo and Adam and your fight for survival forever depends upon available resources and the way you choose to move through the game. To get Adam, you need to track down a Little Sister and either take it by force or bribe her with delicious lolly pops to persuade her to give you some. Either way, you'll have to deal with a Big Daddy, one of the most powerful enemies in the game.

In the demo, Joe approached a Big Daddy slowly, and it showed no reaction. If you don't bother him, he won't bother you. But, moving too closely to the Little Sister, Big Daddy picks her up, throws her over his shoulder and behind him, and proceeds to try and stick a drill through your face. When running around the lumbering Big Daddy, he will continually put himself between you and the girl. Clearly, his job is to protect her, and he does it well.

The Big Daddy proceeds to pound us to near-extinction, and Joe decides to try for the Little Sister in another way. Reaching for Splicer Irritant, a genetic enhancement that gives you the power to produce a foul-smelling chemical that seriously annoys enemy splicers so much that they will try and attack it. So Joe throws it on a Little Sister, and the splicer starts to attack.

In rushes Big Daddy, and now he is fighting the splicer and you are free to try and move in on the girl. Oops, Joe is caught by a security camera. Flying security bots swoop in, trying to terminate your unauthorized presence. You rush to a security console, use some Adam and turn off the bots. Then you use your hacking ability to reprogram them to fight for the powers of good, and you sick them on Big Daddy, who now has to deal with a splicer and the bots.

Still, Big Daddy holds his own. So Joe does the next most logical thing. He shoots a hole in a propane tank and it starts to spew fire; he uses his telekinesis ability to grab a teddy bear from the ground, light it aflame, and use a Jedi mind trick to push it at the Big Daddy and light it on fire. So logical.

So now Big Daddy is fighting bots, a splicer and is on fire, but he still is not going down. Somewhere above you, another angry splicer starts to hurl grenades at you. Using telekinesis, you intercept and throw at the Big Daddy. After a few hits, he groans in dismay and falls to the ground, defeated, leaving a Little Sister to you. Do you kill her? Do you befriend her? As always in BioShock, the choice is yours.

This is just one of any number of ways you could try to take out the Big Daddy. The environment is completely interactive, so could throw wine bottles is you like or teleport about, blasting away with a shotgun. We only watched, but this kind of organic gameplay didn't feel forced or gimmicky, one of the reasons we continue to rave about BioShock.

I'll probably buy it, but like I said before, UT3, GTA 4, and Halo 3 are going to blow all games out of the water and destroy any competition this year. Bioshock is definitely going to be up there though, System Shock 2 was a badass game.

GTA isn't coming out this year. But you got it all wrong Bioshock, Crysis,and UT3 will destroy anything.

crysis is my most anticipated game. Followed by this, UT3, halo 3, gta 4 and so many more. Alan wake is my most anticipated game of next year. Followed by FEAR 2 and a few others. not sure about 2009 yet, lol.

i remember when i first saw a trailer of this ages ago. A big robot kinda (later found out was a big daddy) walks in with a little girl and she starts stabbing a dead body while singing. From that point on i had to get this game, lol.

It has Live support, but no mulitplayer. You can play it on pc and 360 w/out paying for Live.

CoD 3 sucks, and the 2nd was just too damn boring and the first one ftw.

Will be like system shock, a great game that no one will play/buy because of the hype for things such as Halo 3, Huxley etc.

I've seen the game play video and I must say it combines FPS and RPG in a very unique and refreshing style. I am looking forward to buying it.

I whole heartedly disagree. PC gamers already know about this title by the developers, their previous games. 360 owners through the demo released, that is just amazing, and there must be a big ad campaign as well. In media, and most likely in the form of posters/cardboard at retailers.
Yes, Halo 3 is very close to the release of BS but I think with all those factors I listed above people will have to stop and really think about this game.
I didn't even begin to mention the barrage of great review scores that will be following the games release but I doubt those will have an impact on the casual crowd.

I really wish they would've released the demos simultaniously. I'm sure my box will run the game just fine but I'd like to the exact greatness.

PC gamers got shafted big time.

The graphics look kinda.. cheesy. I guess that's how to say it. It doesn't look all that hot but i'll probably buy it and play it anyway.

played the demo on the 360 (will bbuy it for PC though) and it seems a little easy, hopefully it will get harder later on in the game (or the 3rd difficulty setting not available in the demo will make it harder)
