Private Server [Need Help]

Would anyone be able to give me tricks and tips of creating a private server which is able to be played online?

i really want to do this due to the fact that it can be alot more fun with the GM abilities

Any tips are welcome i have a good knowledge of IT (servers and little bit of programmng) but need as much help as possible.

But be aware that running a server needs loads of RAM.

Yeah i have a friend that has an old server that he is not using that i possibly be able to "borrow"

so could run it from there or my PC is pritty good aswell

Define old. Needing a lot of RAM was not an underestimation.

I have 24GB RAM and running a server takes me to around 60% usage with all areas open.

I can tell by reading this thread that this server is gonna be a hit. =)
