I know what it is, but is it better to have a higher or lower gap, and why?

Depends on howmuch SP you have. If you have all the skills you want max, then low gap. If you want to SP farm 9 gap would be best. If you have a GT and want to lvl and still have a nice amount of SP I guess you can do with a 4-6 gap.
