Post subject: Logging off only option? Posted: Sun Sep 24, 2006 4:32 am |

I just had the 1* star popping experience of a lifetime, where i ditch my dead friends while getting chased by a high level thief with transport ( and my 3 star friends goods by the way), and end up crashing, which as I understand keeps my goods safe while i'm offline.
Now I just wanted to know if there was any other way to avoid the popping other than logging off, because its just not practical, neither is asking a high level hunter to come along for a 1* star trade.
My goal is to become a high level trader as fast as possible, and I can't keep asking my guildies for 1* star run help, they have other stuff to do.
I just wanted some advice on what I can do to avoid the popping, while I solo the trade runs.
Thanks for any input in advance.

When you d/c or log it takes 60 s. So if you d/c you sit there for 60s not potting....
Use a horse/get 60+.

Thanks for the replies by the way.
Yeah I was using a horse during that popping, which was unsuccesful might I add, because of my timely crash.
So I guess I can't solo these trades at low level? Well if no one has any other tips, I guess I'll have to figure it out myself, since this is my mission.
My mission, by the way, is to become a high level merchant and hunter at a low level.
One last question though, what are the max levels for Jobs?

There are level 5 jobbers. I *think* I've seen a lvl 5 Thief in a screenshot, but I am not taking the time to dig it up.

Low lvl? Probably at lvl 25+ you can handle mobs and NPC thief easily. When you see a thief waiting to pop in front, don't be afraid to turn back and try to make a circle to get over the popper. As long as your horse is in front of the thief horse, you will never get popped (unless you're unlucky in a way that an ice thief spawn and slow down your horse)
Completely agree with this. As long as you can handle the mobs and your own npc thiefs, you should be fine. When running into a 1* popper, just turn around. They will give up eventually (had a guy chasing me for 20 minutes yesterday, when he finally gave up ).

On Troy poppers are only on the jangan side, usually at roads or choke points. I recommend scouts or doing hotan to don trips (which at 25 will require some help). Very rarely are they on the Don - Hotan side, even then you can usually avoid them (not in the dead ravine though).
Join a guild with some people that can help you and FFS stay away from the roads. Of course I look all over when theiving, but only hit multistars and free loot.

When I started doing trade runs at lvl 23, I usually just sat on my horse the whole way, potting it when needed. This usually worked out quite well for me, although it is boring just sitting there. I did get popped a couple times, but it wasn't that bad. I've learned to turn the other direction and stay ahead of the player thief. Of course it doesn't help when the thief's NPC ice thieves freeze your horse. You either have to hope you can pot your horse long enough for the freeze to wear off, or get off the horse and fight, but fighting is a lost cause if it's (likely) a high lvl thief.

Ok thanks for the help.
So far I have had 6/8 successful runs, and I'm now lvl 2 trader at lvl 22. I'll take everyones suggestions into consideration, I always use a horse and carry extra supplies, spam my friends/guildies for help before and during the run, and the take the long but safe route to town.
I didn't think about going in a circle to avoid the poppers, I guess I'm not paranoid enough about thiefs. Right now when I see a thief I usually ignore them, b/c without a cargo horse they can't spawn me, so the 2 times it actually did happen to me I was a bit suprised.
So good luck trading to other low level peeps, when I hit the multi-stars I'm going to be a fiend, no thief will able to hold me down!! Or at least I hope the high job level will give thieves that impression and back off...
Thanks again, back to mo money!! Trade all day everyday!!

That's a good point. Does anyone know if a higher job level actually gives you more abilities? Is it easier for a lvl level 3 thief to rob a lvl 1 trader than it is to rob a lvl 4 trader (assuming the character levels are equal)?
