Thanks for unpacking the fonts. I have taken them and added them to both Ubuntu and Wine.
As for fixing your libjack issue, you might want to try using Synaptic. Search for "libjack" and install "libjackasyn0".
I havent been able to test the game since installing the fonts in Ubuntu and wine. Servers too crowded.

Great work!
I suspect that this might be an issue with the implementation of the fonts within WINE which doesn't work with Silkroad.
After fixing the libjack problem, can you post the log of errors? I'll try to go through that carefully.

BTW the fonts aren't really helpful. They appear to be chinese fonts from the way they are named.
How did you extract them? Did you use the one written in virtual basic with just an extract button, or did you use pk2 editor v3.2?

The fonts could be helpful if they are installed in Wine. The servers are so crowded I cannot log in to check them.

Ok, this is slightly off-topic. I had my brother installed Ubuntu for me on this computer. But I don't know how to configure it to connect online. I am using Linksys WMP11 v 1.1 and am total noob to Linux. I try looking at tutorials, but I am getting lost. Can anyone guide me on how to connect to internets with Ubuntu?
I have the WEP key and all information, but when I enter it, it doesn't work.

I'd help but I'm not very familiar with getting wireless networks to work on Ubuntu.
I didn't take a close enough look at the fonts, sorry. The first one is 驴碌鹿庐录颅脙录, which appears to be Arial Rounded MT Bold V1.5 Copyright Monotype Typography. The other two are chinese/korean fonts v1.00 Copyright Qnix Computer Co.

Have you checked under winecfg whether the drives are configure properly? Go to Drives>Show Advanced, then when you click on your Floppy, CD-ROM and Hard Drives, check whether the "type" is set properly.
Also try checking "Allow DirectX apps to..." in Graphics.
Have you also tried adding support for Chinese and Korean in System>Administration>Language Support?
After installing libjack, you might need to run "sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libjack-0.100.0.so.0 /usr/lib/wine/libjack.so" to create a symbolic link to fix the issue if it still occurs. For me, even after that command it still comes up.
Right now, when running SRO in wine it shows me this startup image:
Do you get sound in WINE right now? Right now I get cracky and poppy sound that repeats itself though it is Silkroad sound.
It's quite unbearable for me right now, there's about a 15sec action-reaction lag time which means that when I type my username and password to login (even though I type fast and use tab) it still takes 15 secs for one character to show up...then another fifteen for another...

You know, I'm tempted to give up on this.
I've managed to make it into the character select screen after 1-2hours of 1/15fps in VMware (looks really odd)
and...it disconnects me!! (Sorry no picture available)
BTW Text seems to show up, such as my own character name. Haven't been able to test anything else since it disconnects me before rendering any other characters/NPC.
P.S. I don't think libjack matters since I still get sound through OSS anyway.

What are your system specifications? Processor, RAM, Video Card?
What and how are you running the game? You keep saying VMWare.... Are you running Ubuntu through VMWare on a Windows machine?
If you are, you will have serious performance issues.
Why not just install Ubuntu, Wine, then SRO and run it that way?
The funky character display is a result of an incorrect or improperly configured video driver.

It's all emulated. Frankly, I'm surprised Silkroad even works on a virtual machine at all since it causes a BSOD in Windows emulated. Yes, I'm running Ubuntu through VMware on Windows. I'm also aware that there's performance issues (mostly alleviated by VMWare Tools), however, I cannot physically install Ubuntu for a variety of reasons, from no installation disk (waiting for ShipIt) to the fact that I have no extra room on my main hard drive and that I'm not willing to risk the accidental deletion/unavailability of my files since I'm a student.

Well I finally got around to installing Ubuntu and getting SRO to work on it. The game works fine, except a few minor things other people have likely mentioned. Half the time the animations for my skills don't work, but the skills themselves do. Guild/union icons are just white boxes. Most player and guild names are invisible. Also, when I was playing, I made graphic changes in the level of detail and resolution. After I exited and restarted SRO, the changes were lost. So it appears the client doesn't save any configuration changes. Not sure about sound since I didn't have speakers at the time.
On a positive note, it seemed less laggy in hotan than usual. That might have been partly because I was playing late in the evening instead of the afternoon.
After I rebooted my system (after inspection) SRO won't let me in. I open the client and it give me an error something like "Can't open file transfer manager! Maybe was corrupted or someone else using it." I don't know if that's just a bad error because inspection is still going on, or something else.
Hopefully it will continue to work

See if you can get it to work better by fixing the font issues and the animation. Do you have the latest graphcis drivers and have them configured properly? Also, do you have the latest version of WINE, Ubuntu, and everything else?

Assuming you're talking to me, I have the latest version of Ubuntu as of last night. Version 7.0somethingorother. I also ran the software updates prior to installing anything else. I installed whatever version of wine that is available in Synaptic. As far as I know, it's configured properly. I installed the nvidia-glx-legacy drivers via synaptec for my video card (nvidia geforce fx 5200). Video in the OS itself appears to be working correctly.
So as far as I can tell, everything is the latest version and configured. SRO worked fine the first time I started it on this system, but after a reboot, I just get that strange "can't create file manager...." or something error that I posted above. I'll try it again tonight when I get home. Maybe it was because of inspection, I'm hoping.

Wine from synaptic is out of date I think. You need to add wine's repository to your sources and get/update it that way. winehq.com

hmm I'm not familiar with ubuntu yet. not sure how to add things to the repository. I guess I could just go to winehq.com and manually install it.

Props to getting to the character select screen through VMWare though... I can only imagine the frustration..

Hello again. for your wine problems, try to launch wine with this command :
Code: env WINEPREFIX="/home/username/.wine" sudo wine "C:\Program Files\Silkroad\Silkroad.exe"
Replace username by your own name session.

Takes a bunch of time to restore backups since I have a couple gigs of stuff. Especially since I store them on a networked computer.
Even if you're not familiar with Ubuntu, it's pretty simple to add a respository, it gives you all the commands. See http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb. You simply run "wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -" in a terminal and input your password when it asks for it. Then, depending on your OS (I'm assuming 7.04), you run "sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sou ... eisty.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list". Then you type "sudo apt-get update". When it's done, type "sudo apt-get upgrade".
Getting it to work in VMware was pretty much a mess. I had to add the line to enable experimental VMWare Direct3D in the configuration file then restart. After that, Silkroad would load, but it took it maybe 15 secs to respond to one command. I think I had to restart it many times because I typed a couple of letters wrong and couldn't wait 30 secs for it to respond, then hit backspace and wait another couple of seconds.... And then it loaded and it disconnected me.

If all of your important data files are stored on a networked computer, there shouldn't be a problem with installing a different OS on your main computer. You would not lose any of your important student files (which are on a networked computer) by installing Ubuntu on your gaming computer. No matter if you decide to dual boot, or wipe the drive clean to install Ubuntu, you can still access the network share after Ubuntu is set up and running
You did say you're waiting for ShipIt, so I guess it's only a matter of time before you get it installed. No backup/restore of your student files needed since they're on an external share.
Oh and thanks for the info on wine. I'll give it a shot when I'm back home and have the time.

To find out what Wine version you have run
Code: dpkg -l wine
and it will tell you the latest wine version.
The last time I got wine from synaptic it was 0.9.36.
Glad to see others fighting for SRO on linux.

Ahh but see, the other computer isn't mine. It's my parents. Which is why I run in a virtual machine because they get mad at me when mine doesn't work. I also get annoyed due to downtime when I need to submit a Turnitin paper or something.

You can try to install Ubuntu on a external hard drive or use a 2 or 4 GB usb key ... You would never see if it's work properly within an emulation like that ( tooo slow )

ddcc thanks for the help with those apt commands. SRO is working again for now. It doesn't seem to save video settings though. I change the resolution and graphic detail and it reverts back next time I log in. I have SRO installed under my normal user account, not root. I guess I can live with the default settings for now.
At least the game is working again

BTW You don't want to run it as root. Since this is a windows application running on Linux, something may go wrong and attempt to change settings on your system. If you were root, it might succeed and maybe corrupt files, modify settings, etc. Since you're not root though, it's simply "permission denied".
Also, apt-get update is the equivalent of Settings>Administration>Update Manager>"Check". And then apt-get update is the equivalent of hitting "Install Updates."
I'm not so sure about saving the video settings, I haven't tried to load it again after the previous attempt. Maybe when I get VMWare Player 2.0 installed I'll see if it makes a difference since there's support for 7.04.

I'm running SRO under a normal user account now. When I first tried it, I installed SRO under root (then had to run it as root or it wouldn't run), but now I just installed it and am running it as a regular user. Definitely not a good idea to run ANYTHING as root unless you have to.
Unix is very obedient to the 'root' user. "You want to delete your entire file system? SURE! I can do that for you!".....
As for VMWare, maybe you'd have better luck with VMWare Server instead of VMWare player... or even VMWare Workstation instead of player. All of them are free, and the other 2 have more features than Player does.

Server requires an actual Server. Workstation isn't free, it's a 30 day trial. In fact, that's what I've just installed and is testing.

Since when does server require an actual server? I used to run XP Home/Pro and Gentoo on VMware server.

"VMware Server installs on any existing server hardware and partitions a physical server into multiple virtual machines by abstracting processor, memory, storage and networking resources, giving you greater hardware utilization and flexibility."
I think Player and the trial of Workstation fit my need anyway. In addition, I'm running on a Athlon 2400 with 512MB PC2100 PATA/IDE hard drive with NVIDIA 5200 FX. Not exactly top of the line hardware for virtual machines. I haven't even tried running two virtual machines at the same time since I really doubt my system can run two virtual machines at the same time.
I've just tried to test it, but apparently Alps is on "Check."
