Well I upgraded wine to the 0.9.39 version as ddcc suggested. I was able to run around the Hotan teleporter, sit, stand, chat, names of players and guilds show up. I didn't go outside and try fighting, nor using buffs. I had to go to work. I'm sure it will work fine though. Guild/Union emblems still don't show though.
One thing I noticed though (when I remoted into my system through ssh to check on things); I posted the following in the off-topic lounge, but I thought I'd post it here too in case it's Ubuntu or wine related somehow.
--------------------
While connected to SRO, I went to a commandline and ran 'netstat' to see what connections my computer is making. Along with an entry for my SRO connection, it is showing a long list of the following:
tcp 0 0 <hostname>.local:<port number> 64.152.34.142:ftp TIME_WAIT
tcp 0 0 <hostname>.local:<port number> 64.152.34.142:ftp TIME_WAIT
tcp 0 0 <hostname>.local:<port number> 64.152.34.142:ftp TIME_WAIT
tcp 0 0 <hostname>.local:<port number> 64.152.34.142:ftp TIME_WAIT
tcp 0 0 <hostname>.local:<port number> 64.152.34.142:ftp TIME_WAIT
Where <hostname> is the hostname of my computer and <port number> is a different port for each entry. 64.152.34.142 belongs to Level 3 Communications according to http://www.arin.net/whois.
This is occurring in Ubuntu while running SRO. I didn't notice if these connections existed before I logged into SRO or not. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas why it's making those FTP connections?

If you poke around one of the pk2 files, there's a link in there to an ftp server. I can't remember the address at the top of my head, but I remember seeing Silkroad trying to access that address during game time. There's nothing hosted there though.

I posted some updates in my thread in the off-topic lounge. I don't know if the IP address I'm seeing is the same one in the pk2 files you mentioned, but I did open an FTP connection to that IP and logged in anonymously. That FTP server (the one I have in my original post) does have some content. There's a /pub folder with some Joymax, GameGuard, and SRO stuff in it. I don't know what it's all for really, but my system probably has about 30 or so connections to it, all in a TIME_WAIT state.
I can't check from Windows right now, but maybe someone else can, to see if Windows makes the same FTP connections. If not, maybe it's an Ubuntu thing, or a wine thing. Or my computer is just puffing the magic dragon again.

Yep it's that one. Silkroad links to it for a SROCrest or something similar, but it seems like that's the right one.
Edit: With HexEdit (apparently works with wine), I've confirmed it. It's in media.pk2, and it says MarkFTPAddr = "joyimage.nefficient.com" MarkFTPPath = "/pub/joyimage/SRO_CREST".

To further clear up things, I strongly suspect that those are the Silkroad guild crests. The are stored in an odd sort of format (maybe as an ascii coded image) which you can view with a text editor. I strongly doubt that we are supposed to be able to access that area, it seems like they also have some installation file for some game called Audition by Nexon. Anyway, for future reference, it would be nice if someone could somehow count the number of links.

Yeah I noticed the SROCrest directory had a TON of files in it. We're probably not supposed to be able to access that area, but if we can't, our SRO client can't, unless they put some form of authentication handshake into the application. But then we could sniff out the credentials or read them from the local text files or binaries anyway
Care to download Audition and see what it is? I noticed that as well but I'm on a company laptop and won't be installing it here. I might try it when I'm home maybe.
It makes sense that they would be the guild and union icons. Send us to a third party to get the icons for guilds that we see, instead of handling that extra traffic on the Joymax servers I guess. They can't be stored locally on players' machines otherwise the SRO client would be huge and would have to be updated every time a guild changes their icon.

I've tried to download it, but it's around 768 MB which is why I quit. Especially since it's some odd dance game and I don't want to mess up my pristine Ubuntu setup and deal with more technical issues.
BTW: You heard about Euro coming out in July?

Yeah I logged onto SRO through VNC from work just to tell union about Europe and posted a thread in my old guild's forums. There's more than just Europe coming in July. Job update, item mall stuff, party updates (elite monsters and elite giants, tons of exp supposedly). Maybe all that stuff is already in europe? I can't wait to check it all out.

I heard about that too. Apparently I've been included in the Silkroad Online mailing lists or something.

Yeah I heard about Europe too. It was quite a surprise to hear that from Joymax so suddenly like that. I guess the real question is... just when will it arrive in July?
I have yet to update WINE, but I've been pretty busy with school ending and taking care of important things. I'll check it out when I get the free time and I'll let you guys know how it runs for me.

The only date I heard, and it was in a thread on SRF (so take it with a grain of salt) is July 18th. Is that a Tuesday? I don't have a calendar here.
My home system is currently running wine 0.9.39 and SRO is running just fine. Actually I think it lags less than it does under XP. I've noticed it in Hotan city at least. The only thing so far that doesn't work is guild and union icons and often times buffs don't show up. I have Beryl installed as well and it's working great with that.

I'm just hoping they do release it in July and not push it back to August or something. Joymax doesn't exactly have a brilliant track record to delivering on time.

I've actually played for a bit now. I'll have to agree with what everyone else notices. The text all shows up though. And, it does load much faster than in windows. The antialiasing and anisotropic "filtering" from my graphics card seems to work better, it's much faster and much clearer, though I'm playing at 1024x860 instead of 1280x1024. The game options saves its' settings for me between reloads, and I can get Xfire to work with Silkroad too, though there are some annoying bugs. Silkroad bugs I've noticed:
The guild icons don't show up at all. None of them.
Buffs show up sporadically, as does the red lines from bezerk. When it doesn't show up, you just see this odd looking red person.

Mine doesn't load any faster than in Windows. Actually I think it loads a little bit slower in Ubuntu. Either that or at least each "stage" (gameguard update progress bar, splash screens, login screen) seem to have a longer time in between them, but they might individually load faster, providing a faster overall load. I'm not sure... if that makes sense to you all.
A couple things I've noticed, although SRO works quite well, while it's running, often times Gnome won't draw anything in any window or menu I bring up. If I open the "applications" menu, I just get a black box. I can navigate it, but it's just a black cascading box. If I open Firefox, or a terminal, or other application, it's just a black box. My mouse pointer changes shape over elements in the application, so I know the applications do work, they just don't always appear graphically.
another thing: Sometimes SRO will freeze entirely (although rare - usually when I'm trying to log in) and it essentially freezes X. I can't ctrl-alt-backspace to crash X or anything. The mouse moves, but can't click anything, including SRO. When that happens, sometimes I can ssh into my box and restart gdm, sometimes not.

I'd have to agree that it loads slower, though the gameplay is faster. I'm playing Silkroad in a 1024x860 window, and I haven't experienced the black box. If I run Silkroad wo/ the window, then it covers part of my screen in the top left, and nothing can go over it, basically meaning that Silkroad stays on top, though I can still navigate and read in the corners not covered. In Starcraft, though, the screen sometimes is covered with black, then wherever I move my mouse a square of black disapears, letting me see the actual window.
I've never had SRO freeze like that, though it has crashed twice on me.

I'll have to try SRO in a window instead of full screen. My full screen mode is just the top left corner like yours as well. I'll see how windowed mode works.

Wine 0.9.40 has been released. I haven't tested it yet. The WINE website is being hit pretty hard, the page doesn't load at all for me.

I was out of town for a few weeks. Now I am home and have upgraded wine to 0.9.39 and SRO runs very well. Much more smoothly than it did before. Still a few animation bugs, but nothing that makes the game unplayable. Mostly just camera angle stuff.
i havent had much time to play, but I still cannot get into Greece.

0.9.40 works for me. It takes me around 10tries to login, which is why I'm considering just not playing for now.

if u have linux, want to play SRO with wine or cedega and u also have that fu.. msj that says the server is undergoing....etc the way to play SRO is simple u just have to go to winecfg (wine configuration) and turn the option that says win XP to win 98.
In cedega u have to right click on the silk.exe icon and select: eddit settings for this shortcut, there u have to select win98 as the operation system
sry for my very BAD english

Can anyone get the Silkroad Europe client available for download to work with Ubuntu? I've managed to download it, however, if I try to launch it with wine (set to Win 98), it simply shows a little gray box in the middle of the screen, with the console showing:
fixme:actctx:ActivateActCtx 0x16fd70 0x33fb80
fixme:actctx:DeactivateActCtx 00000000 00f00bad

Does the return scroll work for anyone? I just see a cyan window when it's suppose to be loading.

Return scroll worked fine for me earlier. That is when I didn't get killed before it activated
WINE 9.40, Ubuntu 7.04, BTW. Still have that annoying "thinks it's always fullscreen and on top" thing going on, and WINE virtual desktop doesn't seem to work on it (if at all..), but that's tolerable.

The virtual desktop doesn't work? Under winecfg, you've set a virtual desktop for 1024*768 right?

Make sure you've set all the programs to run in 98 compatibilty mode. You will have to wait a while for the GameGuard thing to come up.
