EDIT NUMBER 2 =======================
This is for the Vietnamese version of Silkroad. However it may also work on other SRO languages.
After formating my disk for the second time....I was still getting the
"????????error message"

VERY IMPORTANT............!!!
The last thing I did fixed the problem... I download the "Fonts" file on the
download page of silkroad vn.....
Then extract the zip file. A file will come up with a lot of "font files" in it.
Those files also need to be extracted...(a 2nd extraction)
After that there is an install file at the top of the list....you will see it.....Just install the fonts.
===== This instantly fixed the problem ===== TRY THIS FIRST ====
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
HERE IS ALL THE STUFF I DID FIRST............!
1. All Windows updates.
2. Update video card and audio card and motherboard drivers.
3. Make sure the game resolution matches your monitor resolution.
4. Turn off sound in the game.
5. Make the 4 Silkroad files "compatable with windows 98/me" in the D.E.P. area.
6. Install and run CCleaner.
7. Make adjustments on your video card settings.
8. Make Silkroad an exception in the firewall. go to "run"...type in wscui.cpl then add exceptions.
9. Update the Directx drivers to Directx SDK (9.0c)
10. Delete 'Silkroad error sender" file.
11. I also tried turning off D.E.P. totally....did not seem to make a difference.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
now.............having done all of that.....I am convinced it was the lack of "font files" that caused the whole problem. You be the judge of that.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

my best to all reading this......hope it helps.......mj

I just want to make sure I understand. Please correct me if I am wrong.

- You were able to play silkroad with the new video card and monitor.
- You were not able to play silkroad (not even once) after you re-installed xp.

Try the following:

Install the latest version of Directx. You can get it from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0cf368e5-5ce1-4032-a207-c693d210f616

After you install it, I need you to get some information for me. Go to:

Start -> run -> dxdiag

in the "Disaply" tab under the "DirectX Features" groupBox, can you tell me which of the three graphics acceleration features are enabled?

If all are enabled, try running silkroad again. If it crashes, do the following:

go to:

Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Event Viewer

Select "Application" from the hierarchy on the left. You will get a bunch of events in the panel on the right.

Since silkroad was the last program to crash, it should appear at the top of the list, assuming that the list is sorted by latest date (which they should be by default.) Double click on the event, copy the information by clicking the copy button on the right hand side of the form (It is below the arrow pointing downwards) and paste it here, so I can get an idea or know what went wrong.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the responce Monzy.....
All 3 directx features were enabled.
There was nothing in the event viewer though for the last 2 days....however I do have some good news....!! this morning I tried sone of the other things I found in the forum.
1. Did get the latest directx
2. Found out how to completley disable DEP and did so.
3. Changed the task manager setting to a higher priority for silkroad in the processes screen.
4. Got into safe mode with networking and tried to open. no joy.
5. Deleated the silkroad online error send program.
Went back into normal windows mode and the game started :D .....but now there are players standing there at the beginning.....but not objects in the background?...if that makes sense?
\
edit ===================================================
changed some settings on the video card ........struck gold.....
will post exact steps I took....will back out of the changes I made (one by one) to see what actually caused the problem.......seems many other folks are having problems with the "??????????error".
======================================================== :D

Good to hear you resolved it. Sorry I couldn't answer earlier but I've been working on team term projects that are due this week, and I have finals next week.

Anyways, my laptop crashes to the desktop on rare occasions, but I've never bothered to look further into it. Maybe your solution will work for me too =)
