I don't know what the culprit is, but I might as well blame Microsoft since everything else about their OS sucks balls. Every so often while I'm playing the video freezes. I can still hear sound, for instance, a tiger mauling my Brumby to death. I can still see the cursor turn into a sword when I move it to where I guess the tiger is. I can press escape and, guessing about where the "exit" button is, end the game. BUT IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I AM SITTING ON A DAMN PACK ANIMAL! And 60 seconds is NEVER quick enough to save the Brumby in the middle of a run, and often I end up dead and pissed.
If I get any of that lovely Advice For Morons (tm), like "update your video drivers" or "check to see if you have enough RAM", there may be killing. I am in a mood, which is to say that I am in NO mood.

update your..uhh...get more...um...potatoes?
Because potatoes are delicious, and you can make mashed potatoes and baked potatoes, and double baked potatoes, and potato pancakes, and french fries, and home fries, and potato wedges, and if you're dan quayle you can spell it potatoe.
Mmm..potatoe...

This is kinda weird, but this might solve your problem...
I have 2 technical problems with the game, sometimes-- #1, suddenly my system starts lagging (no the server, and all my programs work fine), and #2, sometimes the cursor doesn't actually point to where the game thinks it does: as in, i'll put the mouse cursor over the OK button, but instead it clicks cancel-- it almost lines up on the far left of the screen, but as you move further right, the offset gets worse.
What I do-- I Change my screen resolution down one click, hit apply, and then change it back up again. And for some reason, both problems are corrected (and they never happen at the same time).
So become acquainted with where the screen res options are so that you can 'guess' where it is when everything stops working. And who knows. Maybe it will fix this problem, too.

Interesting. I might try that.

It's one of the 9600 series, I'll have to check which one when I get home. I've looked all over for a newer driver but to no avail. As long as I don't ride pack animals there's no problem, but that kind of rules out escorted runs which means it takes me longer to make less money.

hmmm, i have a 9600 also. i had a problem similar to this with another game, but i fixed it by updating drivers...... but i didn't use the drivers on the maufacturer's site. it was a 3rd party driver, but i can't remember where i got it. sorry if that doesn't help much, i don't know what else to say.

It shows up in the device manager as radeon X300/X550 series, but debug shows it as an FIC AE X300 LS, which uses the X300 engine but is not a 9600. The plot thickens: debug and dxdiag say it's a 64 Mb card, but the product specs on FIC's web site claim it's 128 Mb, which is what I thought it was to begin with.
The plot thickens further! I get three different reports about the driver version:
8.191.0.0 (device manager)
8.015.123.000 (debug)
6.14.0010.6583 (dxdiag)
Sooooo...

Hm... maybe your gfx card is overheating. I usually get blackouts and video lockups when my PC's fan kicks on high. Try taking off the case or cleaning the heatsinks / fans or move your PC to a better-ventilated area. Oh, and if you decide to clean your PC, do it outside. The amount of dust that gets sucked in there is amazing (and disgusting), and you don't want that all over your living /working / play area.
If don't mind getting your hands dirty you can try rearranging the other PCI cards in your computer to allow better airflow to the cooling deck on your gfx card. If you have an extra card in there (I had a 56k modem in mine) you can take it out and improve airflow. Also, leave those little filler brackets for empty PCI slots off so you get another vent.

i do not get errors on any other game (even ut2004. the unreal engine is one of the most hardware stressing engines out there) so it can't be my card overheating (got a custom fan on it)
maybe i need to update my drivers (i am using ati omega drivers)
will say if it works after updating my drivers. for now, i have to sleep.
edit: i have updated the drivers and it still freezes

If it was the card overheating, then why would it only happen when I'm seated on a pack animal with one or two other players and mobs on the screen? For instance, it didn't happen yesterday, after I had played for a couple hours, when I joined about thirty players by the south gate of Don in fighting strong red scorpions (huzzah!) and strong ishades (noooo!). Call me crazy but that sounds like it would put a bit more strain on the card. But it's worth a try. When I get around to it. I'll probably just trick my roommate into doing it, since he works at EMC and knows a lot more about computing than I.

if it only happens when you're riding... it leads me to think that it must be your graphics card? you mentioned there were 3 reports on the drivers versions.
perhaps e-mailing tech support or calling? only if you really can't figure it out though.
but it might be worth the time to call the professionals who might be able to help you better.
