what does the attack rating of a weapon do

Attack rating is related to Parry Ratio.

If your attack is say the range 800-1000 then if your attack rating is high compared to your opponent's parry ratio then you're likely to do 1000 more often. However, if your attack rating is low compared to their parry ratio, you're likely to do 800 momre often.
