Yes, maybe I should write a guide for this. When high level thieves spawn npc thieves to take out 1* traders. The complication here is that not every high level thief does this on purpose. I have even had thieves help me take out my own npc thieves on a 1 star trades.
There are times, though, that this happens unquestionably on purpose. Here is what you can do on the trade run:
Always use a horse. Horses move faster, and are less likely to pick up spawns. Always carry extra transports. If you have the item mall, you are all set, get ressurection scrolls. I have on more than one occasion, been killed by npc thief, wait until the npc kills the transprt, seconds later, npc thief disappears, ressurect yourself, start a new transport, collect your goods. I have also done this just in time for the player thief to catch me doing it. Nothing they can do, if you beat them to it.
Always take the Western ferry. Thieves like to be efficient and so will often wait south of the eastern ferry, at the crossroads where the roads to the Western and Eastern ferries meet. So after you take the Western ferry, keep going south. Go around or through the bandit stronghold. I always go around, because at certain times of the day, there are crowds of 3x and 4x players sitting and waiting for tiger girl to show inside the stronghold.
Also keep in mind, that you really want to keep moving around the ferry area. You are vulnerable, here. Moreso than other places on your route.
Taking this route, you should end up taking the southern most bridge, and I have never seen thieves waiting at that bridge. It is tempting to cut through the fields from there to east or south gate of Jangan. Avoid this temptation. I have been spawned on this shortcut more than once. I take the southern road to the first fork, then cut left and come back into the western gate of Jangan. I make a habit of this route, cuz when I start doing 2* + trade runs, that is the same route I will take.
Here are some things you can do after you have been killed by NPC thief and loose your trade. Ressurect yourself, remove trader flag. Follow the spawners around and use global chat to warn other traders, with both exact ccordinates, and aproximate location on map. I have had a few lvl 60+ hunters respond to the call.
Whether or not you get a response, you have warned the traders, and chances are, the thieves will not hang around too much longer after the broadcast. There were a couple wanted's in the group I broadcasted about last, and they dispersed pretty quickly.
Now at lvl 4x, I take some time out evryday and spy on spawners. Broadcast warnings to traders, attack thier spawns (and run after hitting if the spawns are red), and make those spawner's lives as miserable as I can. And as odd as it sounds, I try to be careful not to disrupt respectable thieves. You can spot the difference almost immediately, in just how they handle the 1 star traders who pass by.
