The system is a bit gay I agree, but it's not entirely pay to play like alot of games. You can buy these packs of content that actually offer you dozens of hours (confirmed) more gameplay with rewards etc. So essentially you're buying a game with content, not premium.

The only REAL advantage for p2p users is in the NON-RANKED games, where you are matched with premium and non premiums together. Ranked is only playable by premiums to begin with (which I personally dislike but to do this it's only $20 once and you get new features and content as well as the option of buying the packs).

However, paying for content is different in my eyes, since you're paying for content just like you would with any other game.

The truth is, this game has a crapload of content to offer for very litte $$, and people just don't read/research enough to know this. I agree it's their own fault and I don't like it myself much either, but it's the truth...

You can still play normal, vs players, and with friends in coop without premium, and you will probably meet very very few premiums in non-ranked as a non-premium, simply because the premiums will be playing only ranked which you can't as non-prem.

Bottom line you're correct though, if you want to be competitive you have to pay 2 play.

I'm so disappointed, I really am. I just want my favorite games series to stick around in a solid Farking (competitive) game for once. Sigh. AoE gameplay has all the features for a brilliant competitive game too. Neutral mobs, map control&awareness, scouting, micro/macro and speed is everything. It's just such a shame... *sadface*

Well, few days into the game now.

I AM ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT.

such a brilliant game, honestly...

I consider the €24 for premium civ to be the price of the game, and I'm absolutely loving this game!!!!

RTS MMO combined, it's brilliant! I'm gearing and levelling currently, and I've done some crafting and trading today. My homy city is starting to look awesome with alot of buildings too now.

Seriously guys. This game, GET IT! Be prepared to pay $20-25 or €26 though, as you will probably want to get premium if you like the gameplay.

The quests are awesome too. So much fun. The challenge ones especially. I can't wait to reach 40 and start gearing into blues and epics, and play ranked games.

Thanks for trying to help but I wish that was the error but it isn't maintenance i suppose .

Code:
The LIVE service may be unavailable or there maybe a problem with your home networking equipment or firewall. to check LIVE service status, go to www.xbox.com/support

and then i get 2 options , ok or network status .

@Network status : Both internet IP address and UPnP are "Not signed in" and the system link address (whatever that is) is "Not active" , the rest are ok .

I think i will try to figure it out from Xbox website , if i don't then i will pass .

Yeah windows live is a mess.

I have finally made an account that I will always remember >_>

Anyways! I'm still enjoying the game very much. Level 21 now, still quite a while to go. I have rushed most games quite hardcore in the past and I've decided to go easy on this one. I'm crafting and trading like a madman ^^

Btw if you're ever going to play, do it on Marathon. Most populated server.

Finally got the game to work, trying it now.

Love how ms doesn't point out that live and windows live are 2 separate things and you need to create accounts on both to play; of course it asks you for one only and when you run into this "error" you get a link that doesn't work and there is nothing on the web by them with the code for it, good stuff.

Yeah windows live is a mess.

Also, live and windows live are the same thing. It's just that retrieving your account is a nightmare, and if you have been fiddling around with the both of them, it's not clever enough to ask for a merge. The horror I've been through with windows live in games >_> I finally just taught myself to use 1 account and remember it forever, lol.

Well anyways, I'm level 25 now and the quests are getting quite difficult haha, I'm a oldschool AoE veteran as well. Hell I beat 2 people in pvp on my own earlier just because I mixed a few siege into my army composition and they didn't. Had alot of my army left and beat an army twice the size easily >_> I was outgeared by one of them as well.

The game is getting quite bit of negativity but that is slowly passing. Truth is the game has a few unacceptable flaws but very little interferes with actually playing, and let me guarantee you that playing is worth it. Such a brilliant game, very little flaws and extremely versatile quests.

It's mostly just 14 year olds crying that premium costs $20.... which is a 1 time payment that unlocks your civ and everything forever. Also because it's micro$oft, etc.

I still keep saying the game is great and I really mean that. The questing and gearing, and city building is just so well done...

The game feels pretty casual as of lvl 5 and that is good for fun at an entry level, wondering how hardcore it will get later on.

Also the first thing I noticed was that you could select your slaves while left click dragging and that is pretty facepalm, that alone made me take the game a lot less seriously but I'll be back again tomorrow because it ended up being a fun experience outside the dumb very early quests.

So just that I get this straight, you pay 20$ and you get the full game forever?

Yes .

No, this is not true.

You pay $20 and you get YOUR civ unlocked fully forever, not the entire game.

There are multiple civ's in the game, if you buy premium for one civ (which is the $20) then you unlock everything for that civ forever, yes, and content updates are also free, except for the Skirmish Hall which is coming soon for like $10.

There are also DLC's you can buy that offer content, but they are optional and offer no advantage to players who don't have that, in any way.

Hope that helps clear this up ^^

Kind of a necro but w/e

MS announces that AoEO is switching to true f2p model :D
http://news.mmosite.com/content/a/2012- ... play.shtml

It'll be possible to simply earn the premium content.

Also it seems the game now has by now added the Celts and Persians as a civilization.

I think I might end up giving this a try again. It was by no means a bad game, I just happened to get sc2 around that time and forgot about it :P
I recently logged into steam and was quite surprised to see that the game is actually doing great. It hold 3-4 spots in the most popular DLC.
