Wii serves 3M in Japan
Nintendo's newest console selling at three-to-one ratio in comparison to closest competitor in island nation.
Yesterday, international news wire Reuters reported that Sony's PlayStation 3 had sold its 1 millionth console in Japan, nearly six months to the day after the publisher claimed to have shipped 1 million consoles to its home market. Citing numbers published by Famitsu publisher and gaming-industry tracker Enterbrain, Reuters also reported that Nintendo's Wii was at the precipice of its own milestone, having sold 2.9 million units in the Land of the Rising Sun as of July 8.
Today, the news service has updated its numbers from Enterbrain, and it now appears the Wii has indeed broached the 3 million-units-sold mark. While Nintendo sold the 3 millionth Wii alongside the PS3 on July 15, the official data was not yet available, according to Reuters.

Grand Theft Auto IV delayed to 2008
The overcrowded monkey house that was the 2007 holiday release schedule lost one of its 800-pound gorillas today. Without warning, this afternoon Take-Two Interactive stunned the game industry by announcing it was delaying Grand Theft Auto IV to the second quarter of its 2008 fiscal year, which begins on February 1, 2008. Published by Take-Two subsidiary Rockstar Games, the crime-action title had been slated to ship for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America on October 16, 2007.
"Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms," said Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick in a statement.
Unsurprisingly, not having GTA IV in its 2007 fiscal-year lineup has put a serious dent in Take-Two's earnings expectations. The company's guidance is now for net revenue of $950 million to $1.0 billion for the 12 months ending October 31, and a loss of $1.25 to $1.35 per share. That figure is over $200 million lower than prior estimates of $1.2 billion to $1.25 billion in annual revenue--which would have been "break even results" according to the company's second-quarter earnings statement...

Resident Evil 5 stirs concerns of racism
For all their focus on gore galore, zombie movies have traditionally been rife with social commentary and allegory. George Romero's Living Dead series of films have touched on terrorism, class warfare, rampant commercialism, and in the original Night of the Living Dead, race relations.
The two subjects are intersecting again, as the recently released trailer for Resident Evil 5 has a number of commentators concerned about how the trailer portrays a white hero--the returning Chris Redfield--against hordes of black zombie foes in what could be an African village. In an editorial for The Village Voice's Runnin' Scared news blog, Bonnie Ruberg notes one forum-goer's concern that gunning down mobs of angry Africans could be "subtly racist." Ruberg herself says she finds the trailer "strangely disturbing."
"It's not just that these zombies are black, but that the uninfected black villagers are zombie-like too," Ruberg wrote. "See all those spooky shots of the villagers before they get infected? It's as if race itself were a disease. The white protagonist has to fight back or be infected."
She also notes that according to the zombie mythos, the barest contamination, a bite or a single drop of blood in an open wound, spells doom for a person. That could be a parallel to Africa's ongoing HIV and AIDS crisis, Ruberg wrote, or a reminder of the segregationists who used a "one drop rule" stating that black ancestry of any sort was justification enough to deny a person access to basic rights.
Ruberg is not the only commentator to blog on the issue. In a post titled "Blackface Goes HD?," Jason from Microscopiq takes issue not only with the race of the parties involved in the trailer, but also in the setting.
"With all the positive steps being taken of late to raise awareness of the good things happening in Africa as well as the urgent need in some parts of the continent, we really can't afford this kind of step back. We need to find ways to humanize Africans, not dehumanize them."...

in the fourth game it was in spain, anyone crying oh god Im killing Spaniards!!
absolutely not!
its the fact that someone wanted publicity so they start saying the game is racist.
do we need to create a list of countries that we arent aloud to have games set in?
Peoples views on racism are so messed up its not even funny.

It's because in people's never ending quest to be politically correct, they forget that Africa is indeed made up mostly of Africans (blacks). God forbid a white person goes there to fight zombies, because that would be incredibly racist of him. Of course if they had a game with a black person killing hordes of white zombies it wouldn't matter at all.

Ruberg herself says she finds the trailer "strangely disturbing." Ooo wow a white person is killing zombies that just happen to be black. Next time, he should join them in the mindless walking and eating of anything that moves, just so nobody thinks he's racist. And how can gunning down a mob of nothing but African's be racist, if they're "angry?" I think anger implies assault... and there's this thing called self defence. Quote: "It's not just that these zombies are black, but that the uninfected black villagers are zombie-like too," Ruberg wrote. "See all those spooky shots of the villagers before they get infected? It's as if race itself were a disease. The white protagonist has to fight back or be infected." Uhm, let's see, maybe the "uninfected" people acting like zombies are... hmm... zombies? And in a horror game, the goal is to scare the life out of people. You can't show your friendly neighborhood guy walking in the sunshine to the mall. I won't even respond to the last sentence as ignorant as it is. Quote: She also notes that according to the zombie mythos, the barest contamination, a bite or a single drop of blood in an open wound, spells doom for a person. That could be a parallel to Africa's ongoing HIV and AIDS crisis, Ruberg wrote, or a reminder of the segregationists who used a "one drop rule" stating that black ancestry of any sort was justification enough to deny a person access to basic rights. Uhm, zombie myths apply to zombies of any kind. You can't say "Well, since the game's setting has a huge AIDS epidemic, and white people were evil ****heads in the past, we have to rewrite everything about how you become a zombie." It doesn't work that way. Saying zombies were inspired by AIDS is like saying... well I can't figure out a good saying for that... Either way, making an all white village of zombies would be incredibly racist. Unless it takes place twenty years ago, and we all know Apartheid (the evil... no word to accurately describe my feelings for how horrible Apartheid was) wasn't associated with zombies... Quote: Ruberg is not the only commentator to blog on the issue.
Yea, saying there's a zombie plague in Africa is what will totally ruin them. None of the rest of the world will want anything to do with Africa now that a FICTIONAL game has said there's zombies in Africa.
In conclusion, the media is full of s**t...

Command & Conquer 3 expanding in early 2008
Early this morning, the first Battlecast video report premiered on the official Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars Web site. After a fair amount of on-camera hamming, the Battlecast's hosts used the program to announce Command and Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath, the first expansion pack for the popular Electronic Arts game. Due out early next year, it will focus on the titular villain, who leads the shadowy, quasi-religious global corporate/military organization known as the Brotherhood of Nod.
"It's all about Kane," one of the anchors proclaimed. "It chronicles his rise back to power after the second Tiberium War and continues all the way through C&C3." The expansion will also take the player through the third Tiberium War and beyond, and will feature actor Joe Kucan reprising his role as Kane.
In a video interview, producer Jim Vessale described the expansion in some detail. He said Kane's Wrath will once again sport high-definition live-action cutscenes, and then showed clips of actor Josh Holloway (TV's Lost) and Kucan. "It will also be introducing a few new characters," the producer cryptically promised. He went on to talk about the expansion's focus on the "global domination metagame," which he described as the board game "Risk on steroids." The game will allow for strategic moves and then segue into tactical real-time combat on the battlefield.

Microsoft announces a £30 drop in recommended retail price for 360; Elite pricing set at £299.99.
A report by Laura Jenner, GameSpot UK
There have been rumours for some time that the Xbox 360 was due for a price cut in Europe. And now, following on the heels of the US price reduction and the recent Australian announcement, Microsoft UK has revealed that UK and European consumers will be paying less for the Xbox 360 from Friday, and will also be able to get their hands on the Elite edition.
The retail price of an Xbox 360 Pro in the UK will go down to £249.99 ($495) from Friday, August 24, which represents a cut of £30. The Core console, which does not have a hard drive, will be reduced by £20 to £179.99 ($355). In Europe, the Pro console will be cut to 349.99 euros, and the Core will be reduced to 279.99 euros.
At a press event in London, Dan Cornelius, Xbox peripherals and games product manager, told journalists that the new price point of the Core--which is the same as the Nintendo Wii in the UK--was intended to "open the door to consumers" and to "gain mindshare with parents and families" in time for the holiday season.
Sony's PlayStation 3 currently retails in the UK for around £399 ($790) (in a bundle with an extra controller and games), and the Nintendo Wii at £179 ($355). Full story here
But what does this mean for us gamers in general, well the fact that for once the UK gets a good deal before the US, and form a America game company :eek3: . Well I think it shows how we (UK) are becoming a driving force for games in terms of sales and feedback relating to games. Let’s face it we buy a more general mix of games then are American cousins. I for one can’t wait to go out and pick up a new cheaper Xbox.

Well fortunately for me i can pick up an xbox 360 for £100. So unless Microsoft are willing to drop the price below £100, to hell with them until then!

Rockstar Games will release a "modified version" of the controversial action game re-rated by ESRB at the end of October.
A report by Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK
Rockstar has never been a company to shy away from controversy--if it isn't the "Hot Coffee" scandal in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, it's the furor from the press in the weeks before the release of Canis Canem Edit (known as Bully in the US), or the banning of Manhunt 2 in the UK and Ireland.
While a game cannot be banned outright by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board in the US, it can receive an AO for Adults Only rating, which is a similar kiss of death due to release and sales policies; many major retailers in the country will not stock AO-rated games, and Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft refuse to allow them on their systems. Manhunt 2 was handed down this rating from the ESRB.
After Manhunt 2 received the AO rating, Take-Two suspended the release of the title while it "explored its options." In a recent conference call, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick promised shareholders and journalists that the title would be released.
Today, he gets his wish, as Rockstar Games announced that a "modified version" of Manhunt 2 has received an M for Mature rating for ages 17 and over, and will be released on the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, and Wii in North America on October 31.

Well while this is good for US gamers we in the UK still have to wait for the game to be rated

A report by thorsen-ink, GameSpot
Earlier this year, indepdent developer Orb launched a service that would allow users to access their iTunes library on Wiis, PlayStation Portables, and PlayStation 3s. Now, it looks like another independent developer is getting into the act.
Today, Wired music-tech correspondent (and former CNET editor) Eliot Van Buskirk reported that Australia-based Dot.Tunes has released new versions of its software which will allow users to stream their iTunes onto their Wiis, PS3, and PSPs. The application turns iTunes libraries into an SQL database that can then be streamed over the Web, via a secure Ajax front end, to any device that has a Web browser.
Dot.Tunes is free to download and to use to stream to other computers. However, the customized plug-ins for the PS3, PSP, and Wii (pictured) are $10 a pop. It's worth noting that Dot.Tunes is not officially supported by either Nintendo or Sony. It also requires that the Wii, PS3, or PSP browser be open and connected to the Internet, not playing a game
While this may look good at this time, would i really need to access iTunes in my Wii of 360 when i can just easily use my PC?

Link zapped by Crossbow Training
A report by Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Hyrulian shooter to come packed in with Nintendo's upcoming Wii gun peripheral on November 19.
Since launching last November, the Wii has easily bested all challengers in the console sales race. Oddly, Nintendo's success can arguably be attributed to Wii Sports, the proof of concept sports compilation that comes packed in with the console and plays heavily to the system's motion-sensing capabilities.
For its latest peripheral, Nintendo is looking to re-create that success in a similar fashion. Nintendo announced today that Link's Crossbow Training will accompany the Wii Zapper when it targets retail shelves on November 19. The game will graphically resemble Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and players will assume the role of Link as he progresses through a series of skill-based shooting tests.

Orange Box opened early for TF2 beta
Gabe Newell's recent claims to the contrary notwithstanding, Valve has bumped The Orange Box from its projected October 9 release date to October 10. However, PC gamers may not be too terribly broken up about the minor delay, given that the developer revealed today that those who prepurchase The Orange Box through Steam--Valve's downloadable game service--will receive exclusive access to the Team Fortress 2 beta on September 17.
Team Fortress 2 adds a cartoony vibe to the over-the-top action of the original Team Fortress Quake mod. It will be included in The Orange Box along with Half-Life 2, its Episode One and Episode Two expansions, and Portal. In addition to Team Fortress 2 beta access, prepurchasers of The Orange Box through Steam will receive a 10 percent discount and a free copy of casual game Peggle Extreme. Preordered.
Pre-order me one too pl0x.
