You realize you still have to buy the game? It's like Steam, but streaming videos. Literally.. is. Not running off your computer, but a computer somewhere.

Free or not.. this service will fail unless it does something like GameFly.

is true ;(

Quote:

A PlayPass grants you access to play a game for a specified period of time. Membership is required to purchase and use a PlayPass. PlayPass options available:

* Full: Provides unlimited access to the selected game throughout its supported lifetime on the OnLive service. We expect to keep all games supported for as long as people continue to play them, but at a minimum, all current games will be supported for 3 years after their release on the OnLive Service.
* 5-Day: Provides unlimited access to the selected game for five (5) days from purchase.
* 3-Day: Provides unlimited access to the selected game for three (3) days from purchase.

In the highly unlikely situation that a game becomes permanently unavailable before the minimum term of your PlayPass, you will receive a prorated refund.

You guys should really read the fine print.

Quote:
The OnLive Game Service (the “Service”) Fee will be waived for the first 12 months from the date you activate your OnLive Account. During these 12 months, your access to the Service will include free demos and community features, such as member Profiles, Friending, Chat, Spectating and Brag Clip™ videos, but will not include any games, content or other services that are offered for purchase, and which must be purchased separately.

It's a mixed bag this OnLive.

First off it seems they will be charging premium prices for games. Price wise not different than owning your own gaming machine.

The games will only be supported for 3 years. Yes read fine print, after 3 years, the games you purchased are gone, no more. So as someone said, you are not purchasing a game, but just the privilege to play for 3 years.

The OnLive service connects to Data Centers. So if you register at Location A, you will be connected to Data Center Z. But if say you are elsewhere and play, you will still be playing while connected to Data Center Z and the performance/lag will be atrocious.

Unsubscribing your Account is the same as a suspended account. If you do not renew your account in 12 months, your account will be closed. A closed account cannot be opened again. All data, all your games will be deleted. Say bye bye to your hundreds of $$$ spent on your games.

The video for OnLive is capped at 1280*720 and it's not the highest quality. This is not like watching 1280*720 BluRay video or a even playing on your PS3, this is like watching a streaming 1280*720 video.
- The 720p video also appears fuzzy on higher resolution monitors and televisions, like 1080p HDTVs.

The controller lag does in fact exist.
- A seasoned PC-Gamer will notice controller lag at all times. Even using a 360 controller.
- Console players may not notice as much.

And in the end, this is not a service to make gaming more convenient for you. This is a convenience for coporates with an inherent DRM. Do not fool yourself.

I just don't see a reason to have OnLive. Consoles are so cheap, and all the games you buy you own. If someone is wiling to spend $60 a year for gaming, then why don't they just buy a console? Makes no sense to me at all. Even brand new, Day 1 at release the PS3 ends up being about the same cost as OnLive. Because who knows what other hidden charges OnLive will come up with.

Here's what it comes down to:

If this service was offered with SNES and I used it instead of buying the carts, would I regret?

The answer is yes.
