For those of you who love Minecraft, this may be right down your alley. Terraria is a soon to come out game which involves a great deal of crafting with blocks. It is essentially a 2d minecraft in the sense of digging for blocks and building things. HOWEVER, terraria is far more focused on the monster killing aspects of the game. There are bosses around the map, corrupted areas where giant man eating worms spawn, huge dungeons with tons of treasure and monsters, random floating island, etc. In the game you can craft guns, special swords, shurikens, etc to defend yourself as well as find mysterious meteors or dig to the depths of the earth to uncover treasures. Your character can also end up learning spells once you find the right books.
TL;DR 2d Minecraft + Diablo.

Coming out this monday.
I've been playing the Alpha, and the game is a crapton of fun. I love it far more than minecraft because of all of random treasures you find underground and in the sky, as well as the fact that it is so focused on the dungeoneering aspect.
