Hey Silkroad forums, long time lurker first time poster. Played silkroad for a long time on and off, Anyways Silkroad ended up inspiring me to build this in Minecraft, so enjoy I just copy and pasted my post from Facepunch to here. http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1075343-The-Constantinople-Project-(MegaBuild)
Why?
Constantinople has always been my favorite ancient city, I love it for the European architecture and it's famous port. The city was a center for trade that separated the "Western World" from the "Eastern World". It also took part in the famous silkroad (The trade of exotic goods such as spice and silk from parts of Asia and Europe). That alongside the fact that I need a map for a roleplay server I am creating, is why I decided to make a Minecraft map of Constantinople.

Aim
This map is not aimed to be historically accurate, it is rather built to capture to most famous and important landmarks and put them into an enjoyable map. Rather than spending countless hours building to city up to it's actual scale (Constantinople had 1,000,000 habitants while the next largest city in Europe had 50,000) I decided to like I said just mostly make the important buildings and a minimum amount of residence.

What the city may look like when finished

Introducing.... Weekly Updates!
That's right starting sunday (7/3/11) I will post a weekly update of the map, this is to motivate me to do more work on the map, and help me get closer to my planned date of finish: the day that Minecraft supposedly releases.

Coming soon
11/11/11

Why stop at Constantinople.... The next city i would make would definitely be Alexandria though, it would be a lot of fun to put together, But if I get done with Constantinople i could just recreate Europe, wouldn't be that hard with some terrain editing tools.

Just spent a long time working on the palace at Constantinople, update ships tomorrow.

Update #1

The first update of[sp]Hopefully[/sp]many to come, this week was a bit busy but I did manage to get a lot done. I covered about 50% of the top floor in the palace, about 12 new rooms were added, including the King's royal penthouse, 7 guest rooms, another dining room, and much more. This week I also worked on landscaping, I added lights and trimmed trees on the main road. This week I downloaded a mip-mapping mod that works great, It makes screenshots taken from far away look 100% better. Next week I am planning on adding 20 or so townhouses. Anyways, enjoy

In this room you will be able to look down into the ballroom.

I added interior features to one of the smaller building's in the courtyard, this one is the Hunter's Association

This shows some of the landscaping work I did on the road

A picture of mansion #1, didn't work on it this week but there are no pictures of it in the thread

A look at the king's bed, this is just part of his penthouse

Image
The hallway in the top floor of the south wing on the right you can see the entry to the king's penthouse

The Dining room that was added

I did not work on this this week either but, there are no pictures of it in the thread currently, makes a great wallpaper
