I was surprised to see that there wasn't a thread for this. PoE is a game made by a small team in New Zealand inspired by Diablo 2 yet very unique in its mechanics. The game is currently in closed beta (open beta starts in late January). http://www.pathofexile.comSo I was curious if anyone else plays the game and if so, IGN is AcrobatPenguin. This game looks genuinely good. I kind of want it to be Single Player though... How does the online aspect actually function?

Well, there's basically a common "town" for all players but all of the actual gameplay takes place in instances where it is optional to play with others. Unfortunately you do have to be online to play.
Basically it's very much like Diablo 2 except the server browser is the town.

I don't care about being online to play it, As long as I can solo play through the game without being disturbed by killstealers D:. But this type of gameplay just seems like it's a much more suited to be a single player experience. Btw, does the game have a good story?

The story is decent enough, but it's still unfinished.
This game is great, I've stopped playing for now but I'll probably get back to it once open beta hits and we don't get reset anymore.

I just started playing the closed beta; IGN MrTwilliger. I'm enjoying it a lot actually even though I'm only a low level. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the economy and the relative value of things. It's an interesting system which removes a lot of the issues of gold inflation.

long time no see indeed, my favorite penguin. srf kinda just popped in my mind for some reason. am surprised it still lives tbh. how you doin'?
i've been searching for a key for this game since summer, and kinda forgot about it in the last few motnhs, just gonna wait it out for the open beta now. it looks really really good except for that passive jungle lol, who the hell thought it was a good idea to make it that way? ughhh

Forever lurkin' I guess. Been a few changes recently so we'll see what comes next for SRF.
I kinda felt the same way about the skill tree at first, but when after your first character and some experimenting the tree becomes kinda simple. Anyway, it's like a week from open beta and I'm busy trying to figure out which of the 10 bonkers builds to run.

28% here, patching is going quite slow. Despite all the massive changes my build doesn't seem to be nerfed too much in theory. I'm planning to build a dual totem, dual curse, CI witch that uses Ice Spear as the main totem spell. Not being able to deal direct damage without the totems is a flaw, but it's a build that focuses on supporting the totems anyway so it's no biggie. Traps/mines can be used as well so I will experiment with that a bit. 30% cast speed nerf sucks, but extra skill points + improved gearing options should counter that in theory. Doesn't seem too major though. The lack of energy shield on CI does hurt a lot, but the new keystone Zealot's Oath seems like it MORE than makes up for it. Being able to use life flasks on my energy shield? Hell yes! Also since it's reduced and flasks heal for a fixed amount as opposed to a percentage their effectiveness is increased with a smaller base. Over all its a keystone that seems stupidly over powered for CI builds if you ask me. I'm also making a Power Siphon Templar with EB, multiple aura's and Conduit that I will be using exclusively for group play with a friend of mine. The emphasis will be on maximising power charges/endurance charges, sharing them to my friend with Conduit and reserving my massive mana pool with auras that will benefit us both. It was relatively untouched by the beta changes unless I'm over looking some of the patch notes. Over all I'm pretty dam excited, I always love patch days so much  52% now, speed is at 1.2mbs, massive improvement on the 200kbs I was getting prior.

They usually get to 60+ in a race so it's standard.
Got a lvl 15 or so Lightning Strike marauder and will make a Templar Exploding Arrow build later on when I get the skill. Figure I want to make something a little more unique.
Marauders name is PinkPenguin so add meeeeee!
