Messages and Chatting
There are two ways to connect with your friends over Jabber. You can message or you can chat.
as far as i know, things like jabber and pidgin are messenger clients like
msn, but they can contain people from different messenger clients.
about the voip part; what i read is that you can call people over ip but i
cant really find anything about talking to multiple persons at the same time.
if you can provide us with a link that kindof shows us how that whole thing
works, it might be worth looking at. but until now, all voip clients i know are
for single conversations only.
I also remember my corp from EVE Online using skype to talk, but it wasn't a permanent thing- you'd just call someone, then group the other ones in, not a static server like vent
I'll have to look it up, although I'm sure it's supported.
EDIT1- so far I've found this -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gizmo_Project which doesn't have all the advantages, but is still more multiplatform. There is also of course teamspeak, but I don't believe it's free.
EDIT2- What google talk uses
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingle_%28protocol%29 - i'm talking to someone about it on IRC.
