To whoever runs the ventrilo server- can we change it to an XMPP program? XMPP is free and open- it's the basework of Google Talk and Jabber. It's portable and open, so people can use it on whatever platform they like.

This would be much easier on us who don't run Windows, as it would allow us to use native clients, instead of having to hassle with things in compatibility layers.

As an added bonus, XMPP is able to be run in other clients- such as Pidgin. It's like, instead of having to download and run AOL, MSN, and Yahoo, you can just use trillian- that's the same thing with XMPP

This would be really nice for those of us that can't run Vent, and shouldn't cause any problems for those that can, so can we please switch?

In addition, I've looked it up- Trillian does indeed support Jabber, so for all you people on Windows that have Vent, and Trillian/Pidgin (as well as quite a few other multiprotocol IM clients I imagine), you could have your vent communications incorporated in that as well, instead of having to run a seperate program.

So is there any objection to switching to a Jabber server? I could probably host it if need be.

Seeming as they have already paid for the vent server. I don't see them switching willingly. Is jabber even voice chat? From what I quickly saw on their website, its just another IM client.

Of course it's voice chat, why the hell would I suggest something that wasn't?

Taken from the first paragraph of the wikipage,

Quote:
Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an open, XML-based protocol for near-real-time, extensible instant messaging (IM) and presence information (a.k.a. buddy lists). It is the core protocol of the Jabber Instant Messaging and Presence technology. The protocol is built to be extensible and other features such as Voice over IP and file transfers have been added.

I can ask around on IRC if you'd like, but don't insult my intelligence.

As to the server, like I said, I can probably host it if it's needed. I doubt it consumes much in terms of resources.

Messages and Chatting

There are two ways to connect with your friends over Jabber. You can message or you can chat.

as far as i know, things like jabber and pidgin are messenger clients like
msn, but they can contain people from different messenger clients.

about the voip part; what i read is that you can call people over ip but i
cant really find anything about talking to multiple persons at the same time.
if you can provide us with a link that kindof shows us how that whole thing
works, it might be worth looking at. but until now, all voip clients i know are
for single conversations only.

I also remember my corp from EVE Online using skype to talk, but it wasn't a permanent thing- you'd just call someone, then group the other ones in, not a static server like vent

I'll have to look it up, although I'm sure it's supported.

EDIT1- so far I've found this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gizmo_Project which doesn't have all the advantages, but is still more multiplatform. There is also of course teamspeak, but I don't believe it's free.

EDIT2- What google talk uses http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingle_%28protocol%29 - i'm talking to someone about it on IRC.

I'm the only person really in charge of it right now since Zypher is gone, but the server has already been purchased and things seem to work fine how they are. We have quite a crowd at night :P

Wait for Zypher to come back I guess

It doesn't look like jingle is ready (yet) for wide usage anyway- but still, I would appreciate something like TS, something with a native linux client, although I can understand the server has been paid for.
