This post is for Ryoko's perusal when he gets home from work.

Shortly after you left, me and Demarthl took it upon ourselves to make all newly-joining chat users aware of your request. Unfortunately, there seemed to be two very young and immature people there who were doing their best to crash the database. I suggest that these users be banned, as they were told countless times and warned that if they carried on with their behavour they would be dealt with. They continued regardless. Ahh, children eh. :)

The offenders in question are MaStiX, bureQ and their fake registered alt sageum. Here is screenshot evidence of much of their griefing.

http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/2954/chatgriefers57su.jpg

http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/4986/noob5qw3pd.jpg

(That last one is courtesy of sLyFoX, who was on the other end of that spamming. Thanks for submitting that screenie to me, sLy. :) )

For those unaware of what the problem here is, Ryoko specifically asked chat users to keep their sentences on one chat message as much as possible, i.e. not sending many consequetive messages when they could all easily go into a single one and sent all at once. This is because the MSQL database would crash if more than 100 connections were being made at a time, and every single chat line makes its own connection. Having the database crash again, like it did yesterday, would require Ryoko to take the chat offline completely untill the issue is fixed.

I'd blame the admin for no spam protection in the code.

Anyway why not irc?

Don't blame me. I didn't write the software.

>> Anyway why not irc?

IRC blows. The only solution is a real-time chat server. If you have the $400 donation to purchase one, I'll glady consider.

I also agree that an IRC channel would be a lot easier to manage, and a lot more customisable in terms of setting topics, admins/moderators, and banning/muting users and other methods of 'crowd control'. :)

If Ryoko does consider IRC, I would suggest going with Freenode. The Chanserv bot there is highly usable, and lag on the server is nigh non-existant. A reliable and free service I used for many years back in my Planeshift days. :)

-Edit: heh, nevermind then. Why does IRC blow? :P

I used to have a couple of Counter-Strike servers, there is not much you can do about spamming, they finally came up with a plugin that would keep people from spam posting it was a pain to use I had to get out of the game and add that player to the plug-in file to shut them up, it also worked for mic spamming.
People do not realize how much money people are spending to get a game server up and running, plus all the time invested into it.
It is even harder when it is a free online game. I spent well over $1000.00 on my severs to have as many features as people requested, but no one would help pay. I shut those servers off, cant afford them on my own.

I blame you for wrong software then, you cant blame stupidity for anything

I dont understand why irc blows too.

Btw what is a chat server? Does that mean you dont want to get your channel hosted on one of the public irc servers, but start your own server instead?

Yes I would want my own.

There are several softwares out there. Could not find under 300$

I am constantly doing research.

Feel free to help.

I like what we have, but its MySQL. I dont like IRC because its too plain and doesnt integrate with accounts.

throwing blames, you're a nice guy arn't ya.

people have reasons for doing things their own way, as does Ryoko, they sometimes can be obscure and you may not understand them, but they are their reasons and wether you like it or not thats all it is.

quite frankly, from your attitude that you 'wanted to be part of this community' 'but can't because we wont use irc as the chat system'clearly shows that you're not worth the effort.

I could put this in a very immature manner, but I would run out of expletives before i was anywhere near finished with you, good day

for a real time chat server I have used Ventrillo for my Counter-Strike servers, you can rent space from most gaming servers, not sure on how many people can be on at one time.
The vent server is easy to use and set up, the client is real easy to set up.

Agreed. I dont use vent, and don't have a mic.

I dont like real talk at all.

On other notes, no.

I dont want to rent space, or use an account of any type

We have our own dedicated server, that does not rely on any company or other host. We are self sufficient network.

So lets use it.

Woah flame on.

Alright, for the hell of it, lets go.

Am not.

So critisising and reaching a consensus is prohibited here. Noted.

Quite astonishing, chap. I still want to be a part of this, and with irc, it would be a lot easier because i could idle in the room, see logs of you guys chatting, whatever. I visited many communities and only became part of those that had some interesting people on an irc chat. Experience taught me that you dont really meet people just by posting on the forums. They always act a little different when chatting with you. And i refuse to use the current chat thingy, as it is laggish and rather unpleasant. Thats my attitude, is it that wrong?

Oh and for the sake of explaining everything out, no i dont consider myself so valuable that the admin should change the chat tool only so you guys may experience the joy of talking with Me.

Too bad you didnt, i wonder what would you write. 'You Farking moron, your parents are gay, the current chat is wonderful!'

Its not the factual information you present; its the poor attitude and argumentitive (and slighty insulting) way that you aproach.

I can't work with that.

Yes.

But it doesnt have to be IRC. Thats one kind of server.

you may be a grumpy shit by choice but that doesnt mean you can push your sour attitude onto us.

critique is welcome, as long as it's structured and helpful. whining like a little bitch because we won't use irc isn't.

if all your worried about is personalities clashing because you thought someone was different posting on a forum well, you got problems, and so the chat is a little laggy, put up with it, jeez be grateful you have net connection, i remember using a 14.4k modem.

as for the expletives, no, i have a bit more flavour then that, not your average 14 year old troll, but this is exactly why i chose not to, why would i want to fight someone clearly better then me at being immature :)

Dem you dont seem like even reading what i wrote, it looks like you would just press a 'generic flame response' button to write the answer for you.

Alright so ill suggest something. If ryoko doesnt like IRC, i suggest doing something simpler than what it is now. I mean the whole thing looks like it can bake me a friggin cherry pie, so many knobs and options. Im sure there are free scripts that operate on mysql entries and java rather than flash :(

Actually i dont have anything against flash, the current script is too cheesy though, id prefer something simple.

Oh and dem before you press that button, notice the verbs i use. SUGGEST and PREFER. Not 'order' and 'want' as youre implying.

Well I'd hate to use IRC, because like I said. This one uses the forum accounts. And automatically recognizes moderators and admins.

It also does private messages, file sharing (yes, send others files) and uses your forum avatar.

But I recognize its drawbacks too.

What I'd really like, is a java applet - like Yahoo chat, with the client on our own server.

But... like $300 as I said.

Ryoko,

All this talk about irc servers and the like is fine but if i may give my 2 cents...

Firstly what we have over here is fine already...if anyone wants something more high tech, then i suggest he/she offer to pay for it otherwise its needless even discussing it.
But seriously,do we even really need a chat channel. All views can be posted and replies, ie solutions are quite prompt. BTW if everyone were to spend time chatting then they wouldnt be in the game much eh?
The other issue is of course ppl who abuse the chat system. Why just not nip it in the bud and remove it altogether.

In life Ive learned that ppl generally complain...whether something is free or not.

In any case keep up the good work. 8) 8)

I noticed the immature users havn't yet been banned. :/ I'm reluctant to take part in the web chat area anymore if those people are still allowed to be rampant kiddies in there.
