First off what exactly does fire sheild do and is it worth getting as a pure int nuker? Is it worth getting fire protection series as a pure int nuker. If the answer to both of these is yes, is it worth getting both of them, because i can see that being a big sp drain

Fire Shield is a % reduction of status effects. It is not absolutely necessary, unless you have extra sp to spare, but it is a good skill to get later on. Fire Protection can give you a little boost in mag def, but since you are pure int, you have that anyway. If you want to save sp don't spend so much on these.
