What do they do, how do you get them, how often do they work, is it worth getting them?

This could have been solved easily alone:) either from main site, or search here.
Anyhow

Astral is bought through item mall. press F10 ingame
you need silk to purchase it.

as far as i know, 100% successrate.
ive heard of people failing event hou they have astral, either it'd be bug or intended i dunno.

What astral does is help you when you are trying to do alchemy with elixirs on items above +4.
So after you get an item to +4, apply 1 immortal, 1 astral, and when you fail, your item will still be +4. not +1 as it would be without astral..

so it's only on items +4? that kinda sucks.... I was going to get one if it worked on +3's for my bow, then try to get my bow up with the 5 wep elix's i have

Astral can be found on an item, or purchased through the item mall. There are no found astral tablets, but immortal can be found.

For it to come into play your item must be +4 and have immortal. When you try to get it to +5 it will prevent your item from going to +0. You still have a high chance of failure, but won't go to +0, it will stay at +4, then you have to add astral again. Repeat until you succeed or run out of silk.

Edit, if going to +6 use steady as well, there's a different set of rules.

oh its failed alright, on Oasis. 64 +6 glaive, had astral on it, tried to +7 it and went down to +0. he was pissed alright

I never heard of anyone finding gear with astral on:) but well, that must be nice
