i think ppl do it with a flashlight and set their camera at a very high exposition time

You can change the settings and have a really long exposure time. I did the same thing with cars on the highway, street lanterns and the dashboard lights in my car, although I don't recommend trying this while driving. I don't know if I still have the photo's, I believe I deleted them all for wedding photography.

If you want a quality shot, go buy a DSLR camera. Pentax K20 is my choice. ALthough they are expensive, you get get shots like this. Your typical point and shoot camera will not do this. You need a camera on a tripod or something very stable, set your exposure time to long. You can do this in a studio quite easily. You can play with what is called "slow sync".

But yeah, the idea is your shutter is open for an extended period of time ( so you have to set your aperature accordingly) and while the shutter is open, you take a flashlight, lighter, whatever, some light source, and you basically draw it before the shutter closes. It's pretty fun to play with.

Edit: By the way, the first image is PS. Second one...maybe not. Although usually you can see the ghost-like image of the person doing the light "drawing".
