First of all, monotone = no. There's only 1 color in there, blue. Try adding another color. Also, don't overuse the photo filter effect. Maybe you should add a gradiant layer above that to get a different color. What is that? and Gimp has that? The round edges don't look good. Edges are a pit pixely and the canvas is a bit small. hmmm..ok, I'll try to edit sig a bit, when I see more comments =) Again, this is just an amateur CnC. I may be wrong
Overall, just keep trying. You'll get better ^^

Actually ofy gave a pretty good CnC imo. But for coloring I'd get a new layer, brush around on it and play with the blending options.
Also you lucky you, getting PS for free.

I halp you...I used gimp to make all of my sigs. Just got CS4 this year for free as well, college ftw! Anyway to make a gradient layer do this...create new layer> choose the blend tool> choose the color gradient you want> click and drag on your canvas to create the gradient. So... Where you start your drag will be the first color of the gradient you have choosen. So in this case if I started in the upper left and dragged toward the lower right. The red starts where I clicked first and the tye-dye pattern will appear at the end. Change the opacity and the mode of the layer once youve done this. You wont see anything but the gradient if you don't. CnC, bring the color back to the focal and work on highlighting the stuff on the right half. Easy fixes imo.

I only know how to do it on PS. Someone with gimp translate it pl0x. 1. select the entire image 2. right click with a selection tool active --> stroke 3. do a 3px black stroke, select inside out of out/in/center 4. do a stroke again, this time with a 2px white one. Inside as well 5. and another stroke, 1px black 6. set blending mode on overlay (this makes the white line between the two blacks 'disappear' (actually increase contrast, but nvm)
Again, someone please translate to gimp.

Version one is far better since both the effects, depth and focal are better defined, a bit shunned down with the lack of color though. Great for a third one, keep it up. Still, you'd want to have something stick out, as the render and the effects make two rough focals.
