what is religion anyway?

Religion:

- a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny.
- an institution to express belief in a divine power.

Doesn't get much simpler than that.

I just posted the definition, not bothered to decide if Buddhism is a religion or not.

BUT, from the first google hit:

Quote:
It is neither a religion in the sense in which that word is commonly understood, for it is not "a system of faith and worship owing any allegiance to a supernatural being."

Buddhism does not demand blind faith from its adherents. Here mere belief is dethroned and is substituted by confidence based on knowledge, which, in Pali, is known as saddha. The confidence placed by a follower on the Buddha is like that of a sick person in a noted physician, or a student in his teacher. A Buddhist seeks refuge in the Buddha because it was he who discovered the path of deliverance.

No supernatural divine power from what I can tell, just a model of knowledge to follow?? (I don't know much, if anything, about Buddhism. )

That would be correct, based on my two week study of Buddhism in my semester long world religions course :P

But yes, that's the basics of Buddhism and why I would not consider it a religion. It doesn't ask for blind faith in something completely ridiculous.

Wong, have you done anything further with Buddhism?

If you have the chance to choose your own religion then you must be grateful. When i was young my family wanted to force me to be a Christian. I told them that why should i be part of something if i don't believe in it at all.
I don't think this is the great place to talk about religion, but i do think so every single religion have got some kind sense but Christian.
Some people do not believe in anything until they get old. I think that's the explaination of why people are going to the church in their old ages.
It seems i'm already talking about some off-topic in the off-topic.

Hinduism =/= Buddhism. There are many similar aspects between both though (karma, chakras, reincarnation, meditation, etc, and Buddha is considered one of the characters of Vishnu in Hinduism. In the place i come from, many buddhists celebrate hindu traditions as well as vice versa.

This is true, sine Buddhism came from Hinduism (sort of) they have a lot in common. Most Hindu's do some Buddhism things and vice versa. They are also open minded religions.
