So, today I started talking to a Vietnamese woman who lived in Amsterdam for a few years for her Hospitality Management studies, visiting a friend in a neighboring town but she was in the wrong city..
And we started talking about culture, business and tourism in the Netherlands.
We both came to the conclusion that the Netherlands is pretty boring, and business in the Netherlands is hard, because everything Dutch people can accept has already been done and milked out to the fullest. We also came to the conclusion that the Dutch culture is pretty much dead. If you would want to make a restaurant in the Netherlands, you will get a hard time getting customers, as everything is already here. Pizzerias, Chinese/Viet/Japanese/Thai/Indonesian/Indian restaurants, French/English/Spanish/Eastern European/Turkish restaurants, and practically anything else is also overdone already.
Making a full Dutch restaurant will just bore people because Dutchies want something "exotic" and new, but still have the same thing we're already used to.
Practically, if you would strip the Netherlands from Bikes, Softdrugs and Prostitution, we don't have anything left that is really "us".
What are your thoughts on your own country? Would it be easy to start a typical *insert your country* restaurant or would you have to do something else? What are the expectations of your country on tourists? Has your country ever had a real Culture? Where is it now?

How would you even try to make a fully Dutch restaurant??? The only thing you people have is hutspot, and I highly suspect that it might just be German >__>

In the US there isn't exactly a culture. I guess you could say hamburgers and fries etc. are "American" food, in which case fast food would be american restaurants = Yes its easy to start them here. Diners are also popular in the older cities in boston. I only know one american restaurant thats not a fast food (Hard Rock)

Btw, I don't really think any European country can complain about a lack of 'culture'. Maybe if you're from America and your main export product is a fucking walmart you can complain about a lack of culture.

good one! Forgot to add it's Hospitality Management. We already have enough Restaurants/Hotels in the NL! *especially in the Tourist-active locations like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.. It's not like the rest of NL is getting buried in hotels.

So what's the problem now? You want to start a restaurant but there's already too many / the Dutch culture isn't interesting enough to start a restaurant/hotel with that as it's theme? Or is there no problem and is it about all of our cultures. I'm kinda lost right now. Here's a nice concept for an authentic Dutch hotel: put people in a room of water, give them sand and mills and shit and let them make their own dry land to sleep. There's 'Dutch culture' right there Late at night you sneak in their rooms and poke holes in their dikes and then they can get an authentic '53 experience as well. Man the 'VOC mentaliteit' is just oozing out of me. There's enough opportunities to be seized here man!

so you guys don't have unique food, custom, etc? Of course we do. Besides, bikes/drugs/hookers are only the start of stereotype Holland. We got mills, wooden shoes, tulips, Amsterdam etc I think Icealya is just depressed about starting a restaurant here or something.

well aren't you guys proud of your own culture/heritage/ancestry? I am.
And laugh at the f@gs who say america has no culture. Guess what, we've been around for 250 years..and europe? like 3000 years of recorded history. I think its pretty obvious that europe has had more time to develop its own specific cultures/customs. And the fact that america is a mix of races speaks for itself, its just a hodgepodge of people..europeans are pretty homogeneous in their own specific countries.

TL;dr most posts. America really has a great culture imho. It has things that countries miss, and puts it all together. Although it has a ton of problems, the food is some of the best in the world, and in your town, you can have so many types of foods, go to shows etc. Amusement parks, theme parks, restaurants, theater, so many cool things in America, and our culture is really diversity in that sense.

well I have no idea what the real dutch culture is anymore, thnx to all dem' immigrants and stuff. the only real dutch foods are snacks, Kroket, Fricandel, kipcorn, fiandel, you can't order a normal dutch meal anymore ccuz it's too bland and outdated for most people. that's why I really started question the netherlands. She told me herself that the only reason people come to the NL is because we made our own land, and because NL is so flat. no shit most tourists leave again within a day or two. If you've seen Amsterdam and Flevoland you're done. most people don't even realize they're in Flevoland because they expected more from it.
the NL is boring I wanna get outta here. the only haritage I have is just a family trait (pretty face and a good skin) nothing more.

McLovin1t wrote: [America's] food is some of the best in the world, and in your town, you can have so many types of foods eheheheheheheh Nice troll And @ Doron, bro you're so wrong on like every point. It's bullshit that the Netherlands has no own culture, it's bullshit people come here because the land is flat. Maybe next time you should use someone else to refer to than someone who's just here for education. I also lol'd at Flevoland being a tourist attraction, what tourist in their right mind would go to Flevoland. If the Netherlands has no 'culture', what would be a country with great culture? Do we need a city like Rome or Paris to be able to claim some 'culture'?\ Also, prime example of Dutch culture: always complain, it's never good enough. I could spew shit about Dutch culture all day, seriously. Your name is Foeke, so perhaps you're Frisian? If a Frisian can't find something good about the Netherlands (or Friesland), well then you're just being a little depressed. Our country is certainly not to blame.
